There’s only one thing WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis should focus on, right now. And that’s a rematch against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. The word on the boxing street is that the rematch is in the works for June. After how their first fight ended, it makes all the sense to wrap it up as soon as possible, right? To most people–absolutely! But for one particular boxing manager—Nope!
The Baltimore native’s reign came to a screeching halt on March 1 when ‘The Reaper’ pushed Davis to his limits and forced him to take a highly controversial knee, which went unpunished. In the end, what many claimed was a robbery, the fight ended in a majority decision draw. Since then, fans and experts alike have been waiting for the official rematch announcement.
Amid all this, Vasyl Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas, has stepped in to name his fighter the best option for Gervonta Davis next. Loma was originally supposed to fight Tank Davis last year, and talks of a fight were used to tease fans. However, the Ukrainian veteran chose to spend more time with his family than fight. This was being looked at as his unofficial retirement.

But if Klimas is to be believed, Lomachenko might not be gone for good. He began by downplaying Shakur Stevenson’s boxing prowess. “He’s [Gervonta Davis] a much better fighter I think,” Klimas told The Ring. “Shakur, I’m not gonna take anything from Shakur. Shakur is a very good fighter but he’s a bumper. He goes in a shell, he runs away. Tank comes to fight. More interesting fight. Much more intriguing fight.”
Stevenson and Davis have been on a collision course for years, but a fight never came close to materializing. Stevenson even calls out the 30-year-old for a fight from time to time, making sure Davis doesn’t forget the division belongs to him too. Regardless, Klimas believes a Davis-Lomachenko fight is much bigger. “Right now, a full Lomachenko would be the best opponent to fight Tank,” Klimas said in the interview.
While Lomachenko’s manager is busy persuading the world, Stevenson has made demands from the Ukrainian.
Unable to secure the Gervonta Davis bout, Shakur Stevenson claims Vasyl Lomachenko is ducking him
Shakur Stevenson has accused Vasyl Lomachenko of avoiding a fight with him. Despite years of admiration for the Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist, Stevenson now feels let down. “I kind of looked up to Lomachenko,” Stevenson told The Ring podcast. “He was that guy for me. For him to really be something like a duck… it just kind of made me look at him a little bit differently.”

Lomachenko last fought in May, stopping George Kambosos Jr. from claiming the IBF lightweight title but has since remained undecided about his future. Stevenson, who has long called for the matchup, added, “He went and won the title and he’s just sitting with the title and holding it. For what reason? … Just drop the belt and vacate the title. Why hasn’t he retired?”
That being said, it appears Vasyl Lomachenko, or at least his team, wants Gervonta Davis next, but Shakur Stevenson is after unifying the division. Will these fights ever happen? Will ‘Loma’ come out of what seems like a retirement?
