Can Frank Martin really 'beat the brakes off' Haney at 140? Let's hear your thoughts!

Frank Martin wasn’t in the best physical shape in the lead-up to his fight against Gervonta Davis at the 135-pound weight division on June 15. During the weigh-ins of the fight, the 29-year-old fighter looked very weak and depleted. Images of him sitting on a chair, looking exhausted after the weigh-in made rounds on the internet. So much so, that it even prompted his opponent to say after the weigh-in, “He can’t even make weight. He’s been working for a minute to make weight.” What’s more, the laborious, and draining effort of cutting weight wasn’t rewarding in the end. Davis flattened Martin to secure an eighth-round KO victory and defend his WBA Lightweight title.

Now, Martin has revealed to the fight fans that he is going to move up to the super-lightweight division. For the uninitiated, the Michigan native is a natural 140-pounder. So much so that Martin won the 2016 Golden Gloves Tournament at the 141-pound weight limit. Nonetheless, it is still a bold move from Martin to make his way up to the super-lightweight division which is stacked with elite boxers like Devin Haney, Subriel Matias, Ryan Garcia, Issac Cruz, and Teofimo Lopez among many others. Meanwhile, the fans are very pleased with Martin’s decision to fight at his natural weight.

Back to familiar territory!

“The Ghost” took to Instagram to share his ripped physique. Putting his picture in the stories section of his Instagram account, he captioned it, “It’s time to move up”. He also has his next fight lined up.

According to BOXING NEWS 24, Martin could be facing Edwin De Los Santos next. It is the fighter against whom Shakur Stevenson went up and won the WBC Lightweight title. Although Stevenson emerged as the winner, Santos made ‘Sugar’ look average in the fight. More so, a fight against the new WBA champion Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela could also be on the cards.

Have an interesting take?

However, a fight with big names like Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Subriel Matias is still way out of his reach. The 18-1 fighter has much to prove before he can demand matchups with them in the super-lightweight division.

Nonetheless, after BOXING n BBQ shared the Insta story on their X page, fans now expect an improvement in his performance at 140 after his crusade at 135 against Gervonta Davis.

Can Frank Martin finally become a world champion at 140?

This fan believes that we didn’t see the best of Frank Martin in the Gervonta Davis fight. He further claimed that Gervonta Davis put a “weight stipulation” in the fight contract that didn’t allow Martin to rehydrate till the evening of their weigh-ins. However, it must be pointed out that, unlike the rehydration clause in Davis’ fight against Ryan Garcia, this fight didn’t have any such clauses and Martin was allowed to rehydrate after the weigh-ins.

Meanwhile, another boxing fan feels that the 140-pound weight limit does not have worthy champions. He hinted at the fact that Martin could finally become world champion at this weight division. Some would beg to differ as the likes of Subriel Matias, Teofimo Lopez, Sandor Martin, and Alberto Puello are fierce competitors.

140 is so weak he could be champion

One boxing fan claimed that Martin, in his new weight class, could easily beat Devin Haney. Although, currently, Haney is a champion in recess after he informed the WBC that he won’t be taking part in the mandatory title defense against Sandor Martin. He has decided to take a break from boxing after his loss to Garcia, which was later converted to a ‘no-contest’.
