After almost half a year after his loss against Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr. claimed that a cataract was one of the reasons for his defeat. Crawford inflicted some serious damage on a battered and swollen Spence Jr. in the ninth round compelling referee Harvey Dock to mercifully stop the fight. This dominant performance secured Crawford the undisputed welterweight title. Undefeated lightweight boxer Floyd Schofield, however, has taken this claim with a pinch of salt.

In an interview with FightHype on YouTube, Schofield added his viewpoint on the newly shared information by Spence. Why does ‘Kid Austin’ find the claim to be a lie? Let us get right into it.

Spence got the surgery earlier this month and released pictures of himself in an eye patch. The developing cataract, according to him played a role in his loss to Crawford. When asked about this recent development, Schofield started his answer with “I think he lying” but went on to clarify that he was not talking about Spence having an eye surgery. He added, “If it was to the point where you can’t see a punch coming, I don’t care who you are or how much of a bum your coach is, your coach is not gonna let you go in there.”

According to Schofield, neither a coach nor a boxer would support the decision to fight against someone like Crawford with a significant disadvantage like that. “You not going to go in there knowing dang well you got half an eye, you gotta fight Terence Crawford. Be real now.” he said. This is an issue that should have been taken up with the promoter or revealed before the fight. Moreover, even though Spence reactivated the rematch clause, it seems unlikely that the bout with Crawford will happen anytime soon.

A rematch clause for the Crawford vs. Spence fight included terms that both fighters needed to agree upon. However, negotiations seem to be at a standstill, potentially prompting the current pound-for-pound best boxer to move on from the prospect of a rematch. Spence, who has faced challenges with eye issues, including a retinal detachment, recently disclosed undergoing cataract surgery in a now-deleted Instagram Stories post.

Despite these complications, Spence has expressed a determination not to retire. Terence Crawford, the former undisputed welterweight champion, signaled a seemingly cryptic stance on the rematch in a sombre social media update, stating, “I’ve heard it all now, @ErrolSpenceJr. It’s okay though, because, overall, I’m glad it’s over and done with. I wish you well, my brother.” While this does not substantiate anything, a rematch seems unlikely.
