The biggest extravaganza in the boxing calendar awaits. Fans and lovers of the sport spread across the globe eagerly await the clash of the two Titans. For both Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr., it’s a culmination of their journey through the art of ‘sweet science.’ It’s a career-defining moment for both, for they know the one who wins gets the bragging rights to call the times his own, an era. Terence Crawford, in particular, strongly believes that the clock ticks in his favor.

While the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao guided the first two decades of the current century, many felt their departure has once again made the sport bereft of a flagship name. Every boxer worth his salt knows the journey to claim the summit risks tempting fate. But Terence Crawford contends he has it in him to accomplish the feat. The Omaha, Nebraska-born Southpaw clarified his intentions from the kick-off press conference.

He said, “…how do we measure greatness? ….We measure greatness by eras. We had the Sugar Ray Robinson here, we had the Ali air, the Marvin Hagler, the Tommy Hearns, you had the Floyd Mayweather, his heir, but July 29th, I’m gonna show each and every one of y’all why this era is the Terence Crawford era…” Today ‘Bud’ shared a clip through his Instagram story.

Initially posted by the clothing brand Boxraw, the message read, “Welcome to the Terence Crawford era.” As the video rolls, Crawford’s voice can be heard in the background, “[You’ll] already know who I want. Maybe if Spence [gets] his tail out his b**t, he’ll fight me.” The footage then switches over to Errol Spence Jr., letting the world know the fighter he wants to take out next. Towards the end, part of his speech during the kick-off press conference plays, “July 29th….the Terence Crawford era…”

Boxing has had the fortune of many a signature name leading the way. If the viewers in the fifties were captivated by the elegance of Sugar Roy Robinson, and Rocky Marciano‘s power and chin, the sixties brought in a loud-mouthed athlete from Kentucky, a cut above the rest. Muhammad Ali dominated the squared circle till he hung the gloves in 1981. While the four kings took care of the lower divisions, Mike Tyson filled in the void left by Ali in the eighties.
