The unprecedented stress of modern-day living has often taken a major toll on the mental well-being of individuals. Moreover, it can be said that the mental health of students has also taken a major blow, and was further intensified by the pandemic. Veteran boxing promoter Lou DiBella recently took to social media to address the pressing issue of student mental health.

Adolescent mental health was already in crisis prior to the pandemic. However, it was reported that the isolation due to the pandemic saw a surge in adolescent depression and anxiety. There was also a noticeable spike in the number of suspected suicide attempts in adolescents. In fact, research also saw an increase in suicides, especially in individuals aged 15 to 24.

Lou DiBella addresses the importance of mental health

Lou DiBella has been a vocal proponent of mental well-being. For DiBella, this issue hits closer to home. He lost his younger brother, John DiBella, to suicide almost 30 years back. DiBella has often stressed the importance of mental health, and the stigma around seeking help.

In a recent tweet, he shared a news story by the Washington Post talking about the student mental health crisis. Moreover, he mentioned that the mental health crisis among students has seen a massive spike. And also stated that attention had to be paid to the same.

Notably, DiBella is known for promoting boxers like Deontay Wilder, George Kambosos Jr, Regis Prograis, Tevin Farmer, etc.

Boxers open up about their mental well-being

There is no denying that the sport of boxing puts a boxer under immense stress, both physically and mentally. Many notable names in the sport have been champions for the cause of mental well-being of fighters.

Heavyweight phenom, Tyson Fury, has been open about his struggles with mental health. Advocating the importance of seeking medical help, he said, “If you don’t have any family or friends you can speak to like I did. Seek medical advice immediately because now is the time. The sooner you go and do it the better. The sooner you can return to health again.”

Similarly, boxers like Ryan Garcia, Adrien Broner, and Anthony Joshua have also been vocal about their struggles with mental health issues.
