In a recent Instagram video, Oscar De La Hoya voiced his concerns about the declining popularity of the sport of boxing. However, the ‘Golden Boy’ has now put forth a visionary concept that could transform the sport by epic proportions. The former Mexican boxer’s proposal aims to assemble a lineup of the biggest names in the boxing industry right now. 

De La Hoya had previously expressed his disappointment with the Jermell Charlo vs. Canelo Alvarez mega-fight. He asserted the match was “super boring,” primarily criticizing Charlo’s lackluster performance. Nevertheless, the boxing icon recently visited the Vegas Sphere, valued at an unbelievable $2.3 billion, per a report from News3. During this visit, he materialized a plan to transform boxing into an event mirroring the Super Bowl. But who are the boxers De La Hoya was talking about?

Oscar De La Hoya envisions the Super Bowl of boxing

The California resident began by describing his amazement with the newly opened Vegas Sphere. “I was at the sphere opening, and I can not tell you how f**king amazing it is,” said Oscar. Then he went on to paint a picture of what the boxing Super Bowl could look like by listing the names he wanted the event to headline with. 

“Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez, or even ahh..Devin Haney, the winner with Prograis,” said Oscar in the video. He also had the undercard of the event figured out. Oscar asserted, “You have Shakur vs. William Sapeda…you have Jaime Munguía vs. Derevyanchenko or even Berlanga.” But that wasn’t the end of the hypothetical event. Oscar further listed, “To open it up, you have kid Austin vs. Jo Jo Diaz.” 

Oscar announces Ryan Garcia’s return

Despite the differences, Oscar and Ryan Garcia are collaborating for Ryan’s next fight. Ryan last fought back in April against Gervonta Davis, suffering a devastating loss. In addition to being the first loss of his boxing career, it also started a feud between him and Oscar. The two parties sued each other for violation of their contract.

However, Ryan and Oscar have seemingly set aside their differences for Ryan’s upcoming fight. Ryan will go toe-to-toe with Oscar Duarte Jurado on 2 December, as announced by De La Hoya. It won’t be a PPV event; instead, it will stream on DAZN.com. Duarte has a similar boxing record when compared to Ryan, with 26-1-1. Both fighters have one loss in their otherwise pristine record, and the fight allows them to propel themselves in the industry.
