In the high-stakes world of boxing, where every punch counts, the question of who reigns supreme often sparks heated debates. Is it the fighter with the most lucrative contracts, like Terence Crawford and his jaw-dropping $21 million achievement? Or is it the one who faced legends at a tender age, like Canelo Alvarez squaring off against Floyd Mayweather at just 23? This comparison between legends is happening because of a recent remark by Robert Garcia, the legendary boxing trainer.

Where Terence had a recent big win against Errol Spence Jr., Alvarez fought ‘Money’ ten years ago. The venue was the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Nevada. Both fighters were undefeated. Mayweather was 36 years old; Canelo was just 23. They fought for the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring light middleweight titles. The match went all 12 rounds. However, Mayweather won by a majority decision. But, the bout shaped Canelo’s career despite his loss. In a recent interview with ES News, Robert revealed that this is why he chooses ‘Cinnamon’ over ‘Bud.’ However, what’s more intriguing is the way he has articulated his reasons.

Why Garcia chose Canelo Alvarez over ‘Bud’

When asked to pick between Terence Crawford and Canelo Álvarez, renowned boxing trainer Robert Garcia didn’t mince words. He clearly stated, “Canelo’s been doing this for fucking 10 years already, you know, more than that. But fighting at 23, he was already fighting Mayweather, even though he lost. But already fighting Mayweather at 23, so I’ll probably say Canelo, you know, just because of that. Because Crawford’s biggest win was at 35; it should have been, it could have been 10 years earlier. It should have been, and it would have been like Mayweather.”

This candid assessment underscores the significance of early career challenges, often overlooked in the face of financial milestones. So, what makes Garcia’s statement so compelling? It’s the brutal honesty that cuts through the noise of multi-million dollar contracts and zeroes in on the essence of a fighter’s legacy. While Crawford’s financial achievements are nothing short of remarkable, Garcia reminds us that stepping into the ring with a legend like Mayweather at a young age is an achievement in itself. Moreover, recently Canelo has also addressed the talks about his matchup with Bud.

Is ‘Cinnamon’ ready to fight Crawford?

In a recent interview with TMZ, Canelo was asked if he was tired of hearing Crawford’s name for a matchup. To this, Canelo Alvarez replied that he respects Bud as a boxer. More so, he thinks that he’s a talented fighter. However, according to him he just had one big win against Spence. As he said, “He just win one big fight. If you see his record, he just beat one good fighter like Errol Spence is, but, other than that, I don’t think he’s been in [any] other great fight like Spence.”

Furthermore, Bud didn’t shy away from addressing this remark by Alvarez. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his opinion. Crawford responded on Twitter, calling Canelo “delusional.” Moreover, his satirical tweet highlighted the dismissal of Alvarez’s view. He almost found it quite hilarious.
