Last night’s fight in the Boulevard Hall of Riyadh marked the onset of a much more lucrative Saudi fight season. As ‘Gypsy King’ secured a split decision victory against his debutant opponent, Francis Ngannou, it paved the way for upcoming fights in the region. Most importantly, for the clash between Fury and his Ukranian rival, Usyk. However, as the Fury-Ngannou event came to its closure, promoter Frank Warren suggested that it could be as late as March 2024 when the fight actually takes place. Earlier there were reports that suggested that the proposed 23rd December date for the fight had fallen through. But a clarification has been issued. Fury’s promoter stated, “Tyson can’t be going into a camp after a tough fight like that. That’s eight weeks away.” He further justified the pushing of dates by saying, “He needs at least a bit of time to get himself, his body, back into shape. Let it heal. Then get into a camp. It will be on early next year.”

Placing the fight for a potential March date, Warren said, “‘Riyadh season’ finishes in March, so [Fury-Usyk] could take place up until March.” The clarification did not come as a surprise, the responses did have some scathing retort for Fury.

Fury vs. Ngannou fight pushes back the date for Usyk fight

Despite having registered a victory against the Cameroonian fight, Fury became the center of public criticism. His performance last night did not match up with the tall claims he made in the days leading to the fight. A fighter of his caliber had a tough time causing some serious damage to Ngannou. In fact, he even took some damage in contrast to what he had claimed.

With this fight as a backdrop for the much-anticipated fight between the two heavyweight giants in boxing, there is a serious change of sentiments that is taking place among fans.

Much of the combat realm saw ‘The Predator’ as the underdog against Fury. But his performance, despite the prediction, impressed fans, so much so that many believed that the victory was his.

Fury’s team was clear that if he won unscathed against Ngannou, the 23rd December fight would go as planned. However, with last night’s surprising turn of events, all of the assumptions have seen a shift.

Another fan outlined what a majority of the boxing fans expected out of the heavyweight division: fights to go through without negotiations falling apart.

Another fan noted that Warren’s clarification was a direct U-turn from what Fury has been saying so far. The fighter had declared that if Usyk turned his back on the December date, Fury would sue him.

Everyone who stood by Fury all these days seems to be turning on the fighter. Now, a majority of fans think he’s ducking the Usyk fight.
