Ever since Canelo Alvarez dropped the fight with Dmitry Bivol, the loss has bothered him. The Mexican champion didn’t like the feeling of being battered, especially when he couldn’t do anything about it because of his hand injury. The defeat sparked the talks of a rematch, but it never went anywhere. But it seems the time is ripe and the fans could witness him exact his revenge soon. However, it all depends on one thing.
Alvarez, 34, meets Edgar Berlanga, 27, inside the squared circle this September 14 and eyes to maintain his stronghold on the division. Meanwhile, Bivol, 33, is gearing up for his undisputed light heavyweight clash with Artur Beterbiev. It’s a fight that will decide the future of the division and could open the gate for the Alvarez rematch.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger discussed the idea of an Alvarez vs. Bivol rematch and disclosed the conversation he had with the super middleweight champion. He revealed Alvarez, at 61-2-2, wanted the rematch, depending upon whether Bivol, at 23-0, defeated Beterbiev and brought the undisputed title to the negotiation table. He said, “When I spoke to Canelo yesterday, he said he wants to meet Bivol next. Provided Bivol does beat Artur Beterbiev [on] October 12 in Riyadh for the undisputed light heavyweight championship.”

Canelo tells ESPN he’s eyeing a rematch with Dmitry Bivol for May assuming Bivol defeats Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight championship. The correspondent also pointed out it could differ from Alvarez’s last fights, where he was the overwhelming favorite. Against Bivol, Alvarez would enter the ring as an underdog. He continued, “If that happens, it will be a real departure from Canelo’s last 3-4 fights. That’s the fight where Canelo will be the underdog. I think when he fought May 2022, that was a 10-2, 9-3 fight at the best for Canelo.”
Coppinger also admitted the Guadalajara native had faith in his boxing skills and how he considered himself to be a “better fighter.” It also depends on how the Russian fighter sees the rematch and whether it fits his plans. And those are not encouraging for the super middleweight champion’s ambitions.

Bivol laid bare his plans and told Fight Hub TV that his focus was somewhere else and not on the rematch with Alvarez. While he didn’t dismiss the rematch, he didn’t put it up high on the priority list. He declared, “I have another way. Maybe in the future, we could see each other again. But not in the soon future. I can’t see it.”
Interestingly, David Benavidez also complicates the rematch picture, as he is the current WBC interim champion and holds the first right over whoever emerges victorious between Bivol and Beterbiev. He could lay claim to the undisputed crown for himself at 175, spoiling the rematch dream altogether. Alternatively, it could also set up a match that fans have long demanded.
