The much-anticipated fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou is most likely to be announced very soon. The potentially headline-grabbing bout has been in the works for a very long time now. Boxing enthusiasts have constantly been asking for the two heavyweight fighters to enter the ring, given their long absence. This would be the first time both Fury and Ngannou have entered the ring in a while. As we await more details of the potential bout, it is interesting to follow the journey the two have taken for this fight.

Both Fury and ‘The Predator’ Ngannou have infamously expressed their desire to fight each other off. In April 2022, the two discussed their plans to fight each other publicly. The fighters then took to the ring soon after Fury defeated Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium. The boxing world now eagerly waits to see where this long-awaited bout will take the two fighters in their careers.

Earlier today, Journalist Ariel Halwani reported that the announcement of the two fighters entering the ring against each other is due anytime now. If confirmed, this fight would mean a lot of things for the fighters. Firstly, it is not going to be an MMA fight. primarily because the ‘Gypsy King’ is not looking for an MMA payday but rather because Ngannou is chasing a boxing payday. Secondly, what kind of fight is it going to be? Expected to be a rather exhibition fight, the two will probably not engage in a pro fight.

Francis Ngannou’s deal with PFL meant that the former UFC champion bagged a heavier purse and numerous fighter-friendly perks. His relationship with UFC’s Dana White deteriorated after he was unable to lock up lucrative match-ups in the boxing ring. Further, the UFC locks its fighters into a very tight contract that prevents them from doing anything else without their permission.

What does an exhibition match do on the boxing scene? It is hard to tell; however, it sure will pour heavy money into the fighters’ pockets. However, an exhibition fight would also mean that Ngannou wouldn’t be able to secure a boxing title, which was already not possible with the UFC. Is this a wasted opportunity for him? Only time will tell.

Fury (33-0-1, 24 KO) last fought in December 2022, beating Derek Chisora in a trilogy fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has spent the previous months saying that nobody wants to fight him. A potential fight with Oleksandr Usyk also fell flat earlier this year. If the bout went ahead, it would mean the undisputed fighters taking on each other and headlining the industry. It is always enthralling to see an undisputed take on another undisputed, resulting in one losing their title. However, it is too much on the line?

Recently, Fury also revealed that there have been multiple offers for them to see each other off in the ring from the Middle East. The boxer’s manager had also spilled the beans about a bout against the Cameroonian champ. No doubt a fight with Usyk or Anthony Joshua would be Fury’s ideal choice this year; however, a cross-sport clash with Francis Ngannou will also be great for creating the buzz that he needs right now.
