On March 1, 2025, Lamont Roach will enter the biggest fight of his life when he faces Gervonta Davis at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. While the PBC is hyping it up as a massive moment, boxing fans feel slightly different. The majority have claimed this fight to be another walk in the park for Tank, making him the heavy favorite.

It is not just the fans, but even experts are believing the same. However, during this one-sided debate, Roach found support in an unexpected place when WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson claimed that the 29-year-old would surprise the world against Gervonta Davis. This was a bit confusing, as no one knew why Stevenson was supporting Roach. However, Roach cleared the confusion a bit when he revealed that he shares a friendly bond with Shakur.

All we know about Shakur Stevenson and Lamont Roach’s friendship

A few years ago, Roach claimed that the two shared a friendship. ‘Sugar’ acknowledged those claims not long after. Considering how both Roach and Stevenson keep their personal lives out of media, it is quite possible that their bond might exist away from the public eye. However, the speculations once again started when the New Jersey native openly supported Lamont Roach in his fight against Gervonta Davis. After all, Shakur Stevenson was one of the few fighters standing in the Washington native’s support.

Stevenson claimed, “a lot of people are sleeping on Lamont,” while talking to DAZN last month. He further added that Roach won’t let this opportunity slide and will show the world what he can do. “I think it’s gonna be an amazing fight. I’m excited for what’s next,” claimed Stevenson.

However, it looks like we already know what the WBA super featherweight champion wants to do next. A few years ago, both American boxers decided to fight each other despite their friendship. But, according to Stevenson, they have to do something else first.

In 2021, Roach not only revealed the friendship between him and Stevenson, rather he also challenged the latter to a fight. The Washington native holds ‘Sugar’ in very high regard and considers him one of the best.

Stevenson later acknowledged those remarks and stated that he was down for a fight. However, “That’s gon be weird. Let’s get everybody else out the way first😂,” Stevenson remarked. He implied that the pair share a deep personal bond which will make the fight rather awkward. However, as always, the 22-0 boxer did not shy away from the challenge either but wanted to conquer everyone else at the 135.

A few months ago, Roach once again made his intentions to fight Shakur Stevenson evident once he was done with Davis. The 25-1-1 boxer is confident ahead of his fight against Tank and wants to win the title. He stated that he is training to knock out Gervonta Davis, and that is what he will do.

With the intention of unifying the lightweight titles, Roach is eyeing Shakur Stevenson as the next challenger if he wins in March. “He’s a very good fighter. After I beat Tank, I would love to fight him. That’s my goal. I just want to fight the best to prove that I’m the best,” stated Roach.
