How will you react if you stand across from Mike Tyson in a boxing ring? The legendary heavyweight is one of the most vicious knockout artists of all time, and his KO ratio of 88% speaks volumes about his style of boxing. Known for his ferocious and intimidating presence, Tyson won half of his battles before they even started. So, it’s natural to ask if Jake Paul is afraid of meeting him in the middle of the ring and more importantly whether the ‘Problem Child’ believes in himself to leave the arena with a win.

Jake Paul has been confident about his chances against 58-year-Mike Tyson and has even promised to knock him out on a few occasions. But is there any doubt in his heart that the November 15 showdown won’t go his way? Well, for the most part, he hasn’t shown any such signs, except for the one incident back in July and MMA great Chael Sonnen has caught up on that.

In a video uploaded on July 12, Jake and his brother Logan landed in a room with a lie detector as a marketing gimmick to disseminate some rumors about the fight among other questions. Logan answered a few personal questions before it was Jake’s turn to be in the chair. First up, he was asked whether he believed Tyson’s age would be a factor in the outcome of their bout, to which Jake didn’t agree and said the legendary boxer was a “killer at any age.” The lights turned green and Jake was feeling fine. But then came the twist.

Logan asked him, “Do you really think that you’re going to beat Mike Tyson?” After letting out a sigh, Jake said, “Yeah,” but the lights turned red, indicating he was either lying or not confident enough. Former UFC icon Sonnen brought this to light on the November 5 edition of his podcast.

“Jake Paul failed. He has an anxiety. He has an emotion, something that was picked up by this machine. I’m taking for granted that it was an accurate machine,” Sonnen pointed out on his podcast. In addition, he attracted focus on Paul, at 10-1, who gave Tyson respect as a fighter, irrespective of his age, and wasn’t taking the fight as easy work. The UFC veteran then dissected Jake Paul’s mindset further based on the clip and revealed how he had a changed perception of Paul as a competitor.

The Oregon native explained that while the fans and oddsmakers do believe that Jake is the favorite to win, if he doesn’t see it that way then it means he is not doing something easy. “If he doesn’t believe them, he’s got that anxiety. He’s got that fear. He sees himself as the one that’s going to be hurt and going to be hunted. And he’s signing up and agreeing to it, anyway. That in itself, makes him a different guy and a different competitor than maybe we were all aware.”

Sonnen also mentioned that the lie detector was a “brilliant” idea and that the fight is getting “more and more interesting.”  Paul and Tyson will lock horns on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Many have questioned the fight, citing the former heavyweight champion’s age and health. But it seems his competitor is not viewing the fight as the same. And we all know how fierce and competitive Tyson can get.

Tyson had 44 knockout wins, with an incredible 24 of them occurring in the first round. His brutal pummeling of Trevor Berbick in the second round in 1986 to become the youngest heavyweight champion or the dismantling of Michael Spinks in 1988, where he went in on him as a hungry bulldog, would still be fresh in the memory of long-time fans.

During the lie detector test, Jake admitted to being “nervous” and said that “it is going to be tough.” Tyson is training hard for the bout and would want to leave a lasting impression. As if his legacy and presence were not enough, the intensity of Tyson’s public workout on Tuesday left many people stunned, with fans even saying that “Jake’s made a MASSIVE mistake here.”

But even though Jake might have been nervous all those months ago, he is growing in confidence, and during his public workout, he made a promise.

Jake Paul promises short night for Mike Tyson

Speaking after his public workout on Tuesday, Paul said, “I feel really good. Sharp, powerful, explosive. It’s going to be a short night for Mike.” Jake revealed that his mother is scared of Tyson after seeing him throw punches, but mentioned he will be standing tall at the end of the night.

“The god’s got me, the universe has got me, and I, Jake Joseph Paul, will knock out Mike Tyson, Friday November 15. It is written in the history books,” he added. Well, after months of build-up and a postponement, we are ever so close to witnessing one of the most talked about boxing matches of the year.

While Jake Paul boasts an impressive record and has age on his side, Tyson’s history in the boxing ring means he needs to land only one good blow to emerge victorious. Whether Jake will give him the opportunity to do that is a question that will be answered on Friday.
