Can Anthony Joshua afford to 'do nothing' while waiting for the Fury fight to materialize?

Anthony Joshua finds himself in a similar predicament to when he lost two consecutive fights to Oleksandr Usyk. But he bounced back strongly and went on a rampage, eventually inserting himself into a title fight against Daniel Dubois for the IBF strap. However, with another loss in his record’s column, the fans are asking tough questions about whether the British boxer has what it takes to continue at the top level. But what truly concerns them most is whether they will get the British battle they have been asking for years—when he walks into the squared circle against Tyson Fury.

A win would have set up the bout, with high stakes and gold on the line. While that’s not the case anymore, a remote possibility still suggests a potential showdown. How? If ‘The Gypsy King’ loses the rematch against Usyk and bows out with another defeat, a case similar to ‘AJ’. What does the latter have to do then?

Eddie Hearn asked his star boxer to wait patiently and not rush into anything. While Joshua has an option to exercise his rematch clause against Dubois, he believed the ideal situation was to see how Usyk vs. Fury pans out. The British promoter considered the chances of a potential fight were high, irrespective of the result of Usyk vs. Fury.

Hearn, 45, told Sky Sports, “My advice is don’t do anything until Dec 21st—the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury rematch. If Fury loses, it could set up a big fight vs. Joshua. If Fury wins, he could take a voluntary defense vs. Joshua. It’s still the biggest fight in the division by a mile.”

These comments mirror his previous statement at Wembley Stadium, where the Matchroom Boxing lynchpin had hypothesized how, if Fury lost the match, it could set up Fury vs. Joshua. He had declared, “We may end up fighting the loser of that fight [Usyk vs. Joshua], maybe if it’s Tyson Fury.” And he is not the only one. Frank Warren also shares similar views.

Warren, 72, in a conversation with TalkSports, pointed out how there was traction about Fury vs. Joshua. He explained the possibility of losers fighting losers and the fans’ demand driving the matchmaking decisions. He said, “I think people may still [want to see it], if he comes back and got a win, who knows? Tyson’s got his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk on Dec 21st. But I fancy him to come through it. This division is alive, losers fighting losers and winners fighting winners. The heavyweight division’s never been so lively.”

Joshua, 34, might have his work cut out, as he might have to figure out whether he could squeeze in a rematch with Dubois, 34, before taking on Fury. The probability of him fighting another fighter, getting his mojo back, and racking up a win is also a plausible route that he can take. But playing the waiting game could be a smart call right now.
