The Vasyl Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos Jr. event turned out to be marred with controversy! Whether it’s Andrew Moloney’s controversial upset loss at the hands of Pedro Guevara, or what happened in the previous fight that has the whole boxing community up in arms. New Zealand’s Cherneka Johnson took on Nina Hughes from the United Kingdom at the RAC Arena, Perth, Australia.
After a battle spanning ten two-minute rounds for Hughes’ WBA bantamweight title, the ring announcer, Daniel Hennessey, made a minor mistake. No, actually a big one, which may or may not cost him his job! Instead of announcing Johnson as the winner by majority decision, the announcer declared Hughes the winner. Something the announcer had done during the Andrew Moloney fight as well, later in the event!
A heartbreak for both fighters

Earlier today, Top Rank, the promoter for the fight, took to X, sharing the clip of the incident when the entire ordeal unfolded. They captioned the post, “The ring announcer declares the wrong winner in Perth then corrects it.” While the right boxer received the belt, it became a heart wrenching moment for either boxer.
The ring announcer sucks. Re-read cards and Johnson won the fight and title. He fucked up reading the cards for Moloney-Guevara also. What a joke. https://t.co/r3FjrSGFFD

Later, tweeting about the incident, boxing reporter Dan Rafael wrote, “The ring announcer sucks. Re-read cards and Johnson won the fight and title. He f**ked up, reading the cards for Moloney-Guevara, as well. What a joke.” Meanwhile, having seen such a massive debacle unfold on the world stage twice, the boxing world erupted with anger as they called for serious action against Hennessey.
Fan urges Top Rank to get a grip
Given the popularity of the event, the clip immediately started going viral among boxing fans! One user labelled the debacle a Steve Harvey moment, referring to when the game show host announced the wrong name during the 2015 Miss Universe competition. However, even Harvey didn’t make the same mistake twice in a row on the same night.
Announcer pulled a Steve Harvey. #LomaKambosos

Another user put the blame on Top Rank for cheeping out on hiring an experienced announcer. But, in reality, Hennessey has a vast wealth of experience in the field, having started his career all the way back in 2003 with Sky TV in New Zealand.
How did Top Rank bring this guy on for tonight 🤦♂️

Someone else was even harsher with their comment, suggesting Hennessey should be never again allowed to announce fights in the sport again.
This is inexcusable. This man should never work in the sport of boxing ever again.
— Michael Oltmann (@realmikeoltmann) May 12, 2024
The next user went a step further by asserting the incident was a disgrace to the sport of boxing itself. However, it was most likely a bad night for Hennessey.
What a disgrace for boxing 🤦🏽♂️

One user claimed in all the years they have spent watching the sport, they have never seen such a thing happen before.
I never seen this happen in all my years watching boxing tighten up top rank

With that said, Hennessey’s night seems to have gone from bad to worse, as fans are demanding strict action. Meanwhile, there hasn’t been a word from Hennessey’s side, so fans will have to wait to see his fate in the sport. Do you think the announcer should be fired?
