Andy Ruiz Jr has had a rapid rise to stardom in the past couple of years. From a relatively low-profile fighter, Ruiz Jr became the heavyweight champion when he beat Anthony Joshua in June 2019. But, what do we know about the superstar’s childhood?

The former champion grew up in difficult circumstances since his parents had immigrated from Mexico. However, growing up, he dreamed of becoming a baseball star. Unfortunately, the young Ruiz. Jr. had to give up this dream since he never had the athletic body required for baseball.
Despite the setback, Ruiz Jr channeled his youthful energy into boxing. Since his childhood, Ruiz Jr has been defying odds in the sport. Speaking to The Sun in 2019, he said, “Because I was a chubby kid I always had to fight older guys. I was seven then, fighting a 12-year-old.”
He added, “There were no seven year olds who weighed as much as me so I was always fighting much older guys.” Ruiz Jr credited his current ability to take on the big names to his early days. “But having those experiences and taking those punches has helped get me here.”

What’s next for Andy Ruiz Jr?
Despite his unconventional entry into the sport, Ruiz Jr reached the summit of the heavyweight division when he shocked Joshua. However, indiscipline ahead of the rematch cost him dearly and he lost his titles. So, where does Andy Ruiz Jr go from here?
Following his second career defeat, ‘Destroyer’ switched trainers and signed with Eddy Reynoso. He is yet to return to the ring since the defeat. However, he has many fighters to choose from and has regularly engaged in verbal battles with a newfound rival, Dillian Whyte.

He has made a fantastic transformation since training with Reynoso and is in search of a new opponent. Reports suggest we will see the former heavyweight champion back in action in mid-2021. Only time will tell who he boxes in his comeback fight.
