On most days, you expect Canelo Alvarez to steamroll his opponent and leave home, with pockets full and without breaking a sweat. Will this be the case when he fights Jaime Munguia on May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas? Many will back the champion to defend his title, and Andy Ruiz Jr is also not different.

A showdown between two Mexican boxers for the undisputed strap of the 168-pound division has the world buzzing. While everyone has their pick, the American fighter is siding with the challenger, who is coming off a splendid KO win against John Ryder. When asked about the coming fight for the undisputed super middleweight crown, Ruiz Jr. heaped praise on Munguia.

“That’s going to be a really good fight. I think Munguia has such a good [fighter]. He is a good fighter,” he said. Moreover, Ruiz Jr. listed the challenger’s qualities, which will make it a tough fight for the champion. The power of the youth, a strong chin, and the ability to unload heavy punches separate Munguia from rest. But Ruiz Jr. believed that might not be enough for him to bag the win.

He continued, “He’s young, he’s strong. He can take a punch. I don’t know, but I feel Canelo is going to counterpunch him and he is going to be a little bit too much for him.”

While Ruiz Jr. is not favoring Munguia, 27, against Alvarez, Munguia’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, holds a contrasting opinion. He believes it’s time for a change of guard and for the new wave of boxers to sweep away the older ones. What else did he say?

Talking to Fight Hub TV, the Golden Boy Promotion head honcho admitted it was his disciple’s energy and youth that could help him pull off an upset. In addition, if Munguia, at 43-0, stuck to his game plan and remained disciplined, it could spell trouble for Alvarez. He declared, “A lot of energy, the youth.”

“You know, the old horse, the young thoroughbred. It can be a long night for Canelo. If Jaime is disciplined, a 100% with his game plan,” De La Hoya added.

But is the 33-year-old champion ready for whatever his compatriot will throw in the squared circle? Alvarez has hinted at his preparations as he shared his shredded physique on his social media handles. He is serious about this challenge, which he sees as a question of his authority by a new generation. The 62-2-2 record holder also set up camp in California to prepare for the Cinco de Mayo weekend fight. But it remains to be seen whether it will pay off.
