Both fighters made a measured start to the bout. Arreola took a different approach from his other fights and chose to box on the outside; Ruiz Jr. took the center of the ring. This approached worked wonders for ‘The Nightmare’ as he knocked down Ruiz Jr. with a vicious counter in the second round.
The fight came to life in the third round, with both boxers trading power shots. Arreola hurt ‘Destroyer’ who soon followed up with his own shots and hurt the veteran. A rather subdued round four and five followed. However, it was evident that Arreola’s game plan was working.

As they approached the halfway mark, the former champion found his rhythm and grew into the fight. But Arreola stuck to his game plan with lesser success. However, neither fighter could step on it as the fight entered the last quarter.

As the two fighters entered the last three rounds, Ruiz Jr. came out with a little extra desire. At this point, it was clear that the former champion found a better rhythm and won many of the middle rounds thanks to his activity.

The championship rounds brought more success for ‘Destroyer’ as he stepped on the gas and took the fight to Arreola. Furthermore, the veteran hurt his left shoulder and could not use his jab to keep Ruiz Jr. at bay.
