The legal roadblock: Laila Ali’s Quest for trademark protection
Last year, when Laila Ali tried to register her name as a trademark, she was stopped by a company called ABG. Authentic Brand Group (ABG) filed a notice of opposition against Laila Ali. ABG cited “likelihood of confusion,” “false connection,” and “dilution by tarnishment” as reasons for their opposition. The same situation has previously occurred with Shaqir O’Neal, who is the son of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. Even he was prevented from trademarking his name and likeness. The situation is very sad considering how hard she has worked to reach where she is now.
