Earlier this year, an undefeated Ryan Garcia went up against Gervonta Davis. The ‘Tank’ defeated Garcia by a knockout in the seventh round. In June, the 24-year-old alleged that his contract with Golden Boy had been breached. This prompted the firm to sue both him and his advisor for ‘tortious interference.’ With the boxer slated for a fight in November and no end to their dispute in site, the question remains: has their relationship reached the end of the road?

After his defeat against Davis, things went sour when Oscar De La Hoya started hitting out at Garcia for claiming that he received no support from his promoters. This sparked a war of words, with Garcia claiming that the promoter doesn’t care about his boxers and only wants to make money. De La Hoya hit back saying that the reason he lost was because of his own managers and not Golden Boy. Soon it seemed like both were airing their dirty laundry in public. With all this bad blood, the future of their relationship seems rocky. However, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, in a recent interview, shared a promising update about Garcia’s future with Golden Boy.

Speaking to ESNews on the sidelines of the William Zepeda-Mercito Gesta weigh-in, the ‘Golden Boy’ explained what is happening behind the scenes. He said, “We’re nailing down a date in November for Ryan. I am excited, just ready to go back to business. That’s the bottom line.”

De La Hoya said that he still believes that a deal can be worked out. He added that a talented fighter like Garcia can become “a superstar in boxing.” When asked about his performance against ‘Tank’, the Boxing Promoter was more supportive saying, “There’s no loss in losing to a great fighter like Tank.

A few years ago, Canelo Alvarez, Golden Boy’s most prized asset at the time, left the firm and sued them along with DAZN for a sum of $280 million for a breach of contract. The dispute stemmed from Golden Boy making deals with DAZN on his behalf without getting explicit permission from him. After the debacle, Canelo joined hands with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, a move which was very painful for De La Hoya personally. The two promoters have been beefing ever since.

The Mexican boxer left Matchroom Boxing in 2023 and decided to make deals with promoters on a fight-to-fight basis. It is said that when Garcia’s tussle with De La Hoya was underway, Canelo advised Ryan to look for better deals elsewhere.
