For the last few days, Conor McGregor vs. Logan Paul has been the major point of discussion in the combat sports community. A few days later, McGregor took to ‘X’ to announce that he was in conversation with the Ambani family to finance a $500 million bout against ‘The Maverick.’ However, several experts from across the industry claimed that the fight would never materialize.
Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen even went on a rant, discrediting the chances of the fight entirely. The MMA analyst could not believe the fact that an individual family would invest such a big amount to promote their country’s tourism. On Saturday, ‘The Bad Guy’ once again spoke on the potential fight, claiming that the Ambani family approached him to change the narrative of the story.

Sonnen took to his YouTube channel, stating that he still can’t make sense of Conor McGregor vs. Logan Paul’s rumored fight. In his mind, the fight does not make any sense, yet, “that within itself doesn’t disqualify it.” Sonnen referred to his own previous argument where he claimed that no family would ever put $500 million into a boxing match with two non-boxers to promote tourism in their country.

Sonnen further revealed the conversation he had with the Ambani family, who confirmed his doubts. “These guys got a hold of me directly… When these folks got a hold of me that was the first thing they let me know. ‘No you got that part of the story wrong, Chael. This is not about India and this damn sure isn’t about tourism. This is about this family’, and they put the name out. It is about this family building and adding to its esteem and recognition internationally,” claiming that the fight was never about tourism but rather publicity for Ambani to increase their global reach and influence by staging the event.
In the last few years, the Ambani family has progressively ventured into several sports to increase their global value. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, topped Forbes’ world’s wealthiest sports owners list in 2023 with a net worth of $83.4 billion. He owns several sports teams, including the Mumbai Indians franchise in the Indian cricket league known as IPL, Mumbai City FC in ISL, and they even have a team in Esports. Furthermore, Neeta Ambani, his wife, is a member of the International Olympic Committee and even integrated India House at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Considering their growing involvement in sports, it wouldn’t be shocking if the billionaire family would actually sponsor the Conor McGregor vs. Logan Paul fight. However, Sonnen believes that it would be a stupid decision and criticized the fight heavily once again.

Conor McGregor vs. Logan Paul: A fight no one wants to see
‘The Bad Guy’ argued that “It would still defy logic to go into that direction.” He rather believes that if someone is ready to invest so much money in boxing, they should be with legitimate boxers. Sonnen believes that with this much money, even a dream boxing match like Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford is possible. “If you had the biggest check, you would be the one to get Canelo. And to get Bud Crawford. You’d be the one to do that if you’re doing it under boxing rules,” he posited.
The former UFC star called it “a move so foolish that the only reason the media is covering it is because the move is so foolish. But you care about it enough that you contacted me so I would correct the story,” in an angry tone.

‘The American Gangster’ appreciated being contacted in the first place and promised that the Ambani family “can count on me as somebody that will discuss the event.” However, he made it evident that his outlook will always be against the fight and suggested that, “before it’s too late why don’t you fire the terrible consultants that you’ve got? If you want to put on a boxing event—find yourself a couple of boxers.”
The Conor McGregor vs. Logan Paul fight reports are seemingly simmering down as rapidly as they started. According to the consensus, not many fans outside India want to see this fight. However, at this point, the fight remains a rumor and there has been no official statement. Furthermore, as the former UFC double champion still has 2 fights left in his UFC contract, Dana White might not even let him go. So, the fans can do nothing but wait for an official announcement.
