Is it time for women's boxing to adopt twelve three-minute rounds like the men?

Amanda Serrano has found an ally in her tussle with the sanctioning bodies. The Puerto Rican boxer has long campaigned for equality in women’s boxing and her idea of equality through the monumental change of 3-minute rounds. The boxing world is sharply divided on the change and how will it affect the boxers. But it seems, for now, there is another big name in Chantelle Cameron who has thrown her weight behind her.

Serrano, 35, who even relinquished the WBC title for not allowing her to fight for 3-minute rounds, again torched the debate when she sat down at the WBOJABS podcast. She pointed out how Katie Taylor didn’t agree to the idea of the same in their rematch and then went on to expand on her argument of 3-minute rounds.

Serrano, at 47-2-1, said, “We want 12×3 because, like you said, equality. But we want to showcase our skills and we have skills. But with the 10×2, Jordan always said, that’s a sprint for us. We gotta do it super fast.”

Cameron, 33, commented on the MVP social media post that shared the clip of this segment, expressing her support for changes in women’s boxing. The British fighter believes such changes are needed to revolutionize women’s boxing and bring it to parity. She wrote, “Women’s boxing needs 3 minute rounds to change the game again 🙌”

Cameron, with a 19-1 record, has frequently advocated for changes in women’s boxing. In 2021, she requested the WBC and IBF to sanction her title defense against Victoria Noelia Bustos as a 10×3-round fight, but both organizations denied her request. The following year, the Northampton native wrote an article for ESPN, highlighting the need for reform and linking it to the low payouts for female fighters. She even proposed a 12×3-round rematch with Taylor, which also did not come to fruition.

Cameron and Taylor fought for all the marbles at light welterweight in November last year, where the latter avenged her defeat in their first encounter. Since then, there have been talks of a trilogy fight. However, nothing has come out of it.

After signing up with Queensberry, ‘Il Capo’ declared, “I don’t think Katie wants to fight me again. She had the chance, and I thought the trilogy was signed and ready to go… But Katie, her team, and her manager had other plans and didn’t want the fight.”

Cameron recently picked up the WBC interim title against Elhem Mekhaled. She might well be on the course to get another title shot soon. Whether it will be a 12×3 affair or not remains to be seen.
