It’s been nearly two months since Alycia Baumgardner fought Delfine Persoon at Atlanta’s Lux Studios. The fight, a second title defense since she became an undisputed champion last year, ended in a ‘no contest’ after her Belgian challenger suffered an injury. It was a comeback fight for Baumgardner, who faced controversy surrounding banned substances following her win over Christina Linardatou.
The months in between saw rumors of a clash with Claressa Shields emerge. But given the sheer weight difference between the two undisputed champions, the matchup seems highly unlikely, at least for now. However, in a recent interview, Alycia Baumgardner appeared willing to fight at a more reasonable 135 or 140 pounds. Now that would put her in Katie Taylor‘s direct line of fire. The Fremont native, nevertheless, feels quite optimistic. Taylor’s fight against Amanda Serrano has motivated Baumgardner to take her career to the next level. If chasing greatness involves a clash against the top dog, then so be it.
Alycia Baumgardner and Gareth A. Davies were speaking with Adam Smith and Tunde Ajayi. The conversation began with the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. Unlike many who criticized the exchange, Baumgardner sounded quite happy and optimistic about the spectacle.

The fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano came up next. Alycia Baumgardner, like many, felt that the Puerto Rican champion had won the rematch. Gareth Davies touched base with the hot topic of a trilogy match between Taylor and Serrano. Based on the update he received, it seems Katie Taylor may not be too inclined for a third edition.
For many fans who might want to see a third fight, this could be a major disappointment. However, Davies felt that the situation presents an opportunity. Alycia Baumgardner might fill the gap. “I spoke to her (Katie Taylor) afterwards before the press conference; it doesn’t feel like she wants a third fight with Amanda Serrano, so maybe this is where Alycia Baumgardner steps in?” asked Gareth A. Davies.
Alycia Baumgardner: The world is ready for a new narrative
‘The Bomb’ also sounded quite optimistic. She felt it was time the world came across a new phenomenon. “I think now it’s time to show the world a different opportunity, and when I say different opportunity, a different fighter at a different caliber,” she said. According to Alycia Baumgardner, it was the perfect time—with so many people switching back to boxing, a fight with Taylor becomes a compelling proposition.

That clearly roused Davies’ curiosity. He wanted to know the weight division where Baumgardner could face Taylor. The super featherweight champion replied, “You know 140 is fine with me, 135.”
The panel members at the talkSPORT studio also seemed quite positive about the matchup. Adam Smith commented, “I absolutely love it. I think it’s a fantastic fight. I mean, Katie, yeah, we could see her in against Amanda Serrano for the trilogy. We could see her in against Shontel Cameron, but Alicia Baumgardner, Alycia, it would be fantastic if you got the opportunity.”
