Fans might revel in the clips featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. introducing Curmel Moton. There was a time when Mayweather Jr. had another bright prospect by his side – Gervonta Davis. As a young fighter, he thrived under Mayweather Jr.’s mentorship and quickly ascended to boxing stardom. Yet, beneath the surface, tensions simmered. Eventually, the rift became public. Though their split appeared amicable, it soon gave way to a bitter feud between the former world champion and boxing legend and the new face of the sport.

Now, Gervonta Davis is just ten days away from his second title defense against Lamont Roach Jr. The two will face off at the Barclays Center on March 1. ‘Tank’ has already stunned the boxing world by announcing his plans to retire by the end of the year. In a candid conversation with fellow Baltimorean and multimedia journalist Jay Hill, Davis opened up about various topics. It was inevitable that his evolving relationship with Mayweather Jr. would come up. Some of his revelations may shock fans who never expected things to escalate this far.

“One thing I thought about when preparing for this interview is the idea of idols becoming rivals,” stated Jay Hill. What began as mentorship gradually morphed into tension – and possibly a bitter rivalry. Hill noted that once a person is no longer useful, they are often cast aside. While he clarified that he wasn’t directly accusing Floyd Mayweather Jr., he suggested that he had personally experienced similar situations.

Davis agreed with the perspective. When you admire someone from a distance, you often form an idealized image of them. However, once you get close, they may not be who they seem. It can be a ‘letdown,’ he emphasized. “I’ve been in situation where, though, like, you know, I was in a lose-lose situation now came out still on top,” said ‘Tank’ Davis.

His comment piqued Jay Hill’s curiosity. What did Davis mean when he said he was put in a ‘lose-lose’ situation? According to Davis, Floyd Mayweather Jr. placed him in a difficult position when he was just 21 years old.
