Alvarez was preparing for his upcoming bout. For the same, he was sparring with Rashidi Ellis, a welterweight prospect. A video was released in which Alvarez got hit a couple of times by his sparring partner. A user named, @ClenbutrolPlugz saw this as an opportunity to bash him and also predict his fight against Benavidez judging his sparring clip.

He took to Twitter and stated, “I know it’s sparring BUT. That is Rashidi Ellis! Imagine David Benavidez letting off on him in the ropes”.

The Tweet did not sit well with the boxing community who came out in full support of Alvarez. Below are a few reactions to the same:

One of the greatest female boxers of all time, Amanda Serrano came out guns blazing to critique the Tweet and explain the purpose of sparring. @Serranosisters: “This is why Sparring gets a bad name. It’s supposed to be used for working on new things or Just sharpening them up but some really believe it’s a fight  I’ve worked on just jabs in sparring, meaning Never letting off a left hand. Doesn’t mean that’s how I fight. Ppl PLEASE!”

Legendary boxing promoter, @loudibella on similar lines stated, “Oy vey. This footage leaving the #boxing gym is bush league. First of all, IT DOESNT MEAN  … not a DAMN thing. Secondly, sparring for a true pro, championship-calibre, fighter is about working on things. Canelo is on the ropes for a reason; he’s there by CHOICE. Smh!”

One fan had a suggestion, @JodieGoodnite: “instead of sh*tting on Canelo, can we give Ellis love pleas”

Another fan mentioned that a sparring session is not a true representation of a competitive boxing match. @FloridaNaijaPH: You cannot use a video from a sparring session to draw any conclusions cause you have no clue what they were specifically working on during said session. Stop it.”

Lastly, one fan named @CrossJc1704340 mentioned a great point. He stated, “From Louis,Ali,Mayweather, Tyson all Great Fighters get hit in sparring if you see any films of Ali he always took a Beating in sparring ,Tyson was dropped once, the fighters mindset fighter’s mindset is totally different when sparring”
