Alexandro Santiago is now the new WBC Bantamweight champion of the world. The 27-year-old battled 12 3-minute rounds with the former unified Bantamweight champion and 40-year-old Nonito Donaire. Despite an age gap of 13 years, Donaire fought toe-to-toe and survived till the last second of the fight.
The UD victory against Donaire meant so much to Santiago. Hence, after the decision was announced, the Mexican boxer could not help but shed tears of joy and appreciation inside the ring. As soon as the decision was brought to light, Donaire approached a bruised Santiago and embraced him. At this, Santiago, holding Donaire with his heart and soul, shed tears of joy overwhelmed at his own victory.

Max Deluca, Chris Migliore, and Steve Weisfeld scored the contest respectively 113-115, 112-116, 112-116 in Santiago’s favor. With this memorable victory against Nonito Donaire who was asked to retire after his bout with Naoya Inoue, Santiago found himself clothed with emotions.

After the bout was over, Mike Coppinger took to Twitter and suggested that it could possibly be “the end of Donaire’s illustrious career“. However, he was simultaneously of the opinion that Donaire just might refuse to hang his gloves after this latest defeat to Santiago. Taking to Twitter, Coppinger wrote, “Alexandro Santiago wins the WBC bantamweight title with a unanimous-decision victory over future Hall of Famer Nonito Donaire: 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112. At 40, this could be the end of Donaire’s illustrious career, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll retire.”

With this fight against Santiago, the 40-year-old now has a record of 8 losses and 42 wins. It has been over two decades since Donaire made his professional debut. While Santiago becomes the WBC Bantamweight champion, a question remains regarding Donaire’s next move in the sport. Will Donaire, as suspected by Coppinger, retire and find a new path? Or, would he find himself back in the boxing ring? Fans will have to wait for an answer.
