Russian fighter Alexander Povetkin opened up on his incredible win over former WBC interim heavyweight champion, Dillian Whyte.
Povetkin suffered early adversity in the fight. Whyte — who looked like the better boxer until the finish — knocked down Povetkin twice in the fourth round. At a point in time, even the commentators felt like Whyte would eventually finish Povetkin to retain his mandatory status.
However, it took one shot by Povetkin to change the dynamics of the match. The 40-year-old delivered a massive uppercut that knocked out Whyte on his feet. When “The Body Snatcher’s” body hit the canvas, there was absolutely no doubt about Povetkin’s victory.

Post-fight, Povetkin talked about the two knockdowns in the bout. He stated that he did not take much damage from the knockdowns. This may be true to some extent, as Povetkin was not on wobbly legs after getting up both times.
“I didn’t feel that I would finish the fight like this. I was pretty confident in the 4th round that, even though I went down twice, it was OK. It wasn’t too much damage.”
Moreover, Povetkin gave his thoughts on the knockout sequence. The “White Lion” claimed to have practiced similar combinations throughout his training camp.
“I was watching his fights and taking into account that he was missing uppercuts from the left and from the right. During my training, I was training on putting combinations around those shots.”
Alexander Povetkin talks about a rematch with Dillian Whyte
When asked about a potential rematch, Povetkin said:
“First of all, my future plans don’t depend on me, it’s more a question for my promoter and for Eddie Hearn. So we will see what they decide. At the same time, I want to thank Andrei Ryabinski and Eddie Hearn for everything they do for me.”
Unsurprisingly, Povetkin had a lot of doubters going into the fight. Many critics did not expect him to win because of his age and deteriorating hand speed. Well, Povetkin prefers not to talk about the skeptics.
“I don’t have anything to respond to those people. I just want to box more. I want to thank all of the fans who believe in me.”
