A few days ago, ESPN‘s Salvador Rodriguez shared a report. It said Floyd Mayweather Jr. would share some details about a tentative exhibition fight. His opponent would be someone he fought over a decade ago. The bout with Victor Ortiz would take place at Mexico City’s Plaza de Toros Mexico. The venue happens to be the world’s largest bullring.

However, today Rodriguez came up with a fresh update. It seems to suggest that the fate of the much-anticipated exhibition between the two bitter rivals hangs in the balance. That was enough for fans and followers, the majority of whom, from a glance, appear to be Spanish speakers, to jump in with their viewpoints and thoughts. Displeasure, for the most part, looked like the common narrative.

Salvador Rodriguez had initially written, “They tell me that Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather will announce an exhibition fight against Víctor ‘Vicious’ Ortiz for August 24 at the Plaza de Toros México… Wednesday they give more details. Mayweather KO4 Ortiz in 2011 by catching him with his guard down after a headbutt.

But today’s tweet suggests that Mayweather Jr. didn’t make it to the conference. He allegedly removed the promotional poster from Instagram. Though Victor Ortiz attended the conference, he was hardly introduced by anyone. “They did not reveal a rival. CDMX Government CANCELED training this Thursday.

It was on September 17, 2011 that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz met at the MGM Grand Arena for the WBC welterweight title. The match ended in the fourth round with a knockout victory for the former. However, it was the melodramatic way that it unfolded which kept the match in every diehard’s memory.

A head-butt from Ortiz forced the referee to call for a timeout. The match later resumed, with both boxers coming closer to touch the gloves. Soon after a hug, as Ortiz moved, Mayweather Jr. took advantage. His opponent hadn’t raised his hand guard. A quick volley of the left hook and a straight right threw the Mexican-American boxer to the canvas. He couldn’t keep up with the referee’s count and lost the match.

Though it was a perfectly legal attempt on Mayweather Jr.’s part, many criticized him for his unsportsmanlike conduct. From most of the reactions, it appeared that most foresaw the show taking such an unexpected turn. However, it’s not something they would have wanted.

It seems like this user could foresee that Floyd Mayweather Jr. wouldn’t make an appearance. After all, he charges around $50 million for his matches, they posited.

This user also appears to believe likewise. According to them, it’s not something new. Most of the fans and followers are well aware of Mayweather Jr.’s character. Ideally, he shouldn’t be given coverage, the user seems to think.

Calling out ‘The Money’ as the ‘worst boxer in history, this follower seemingly laughed out loud at all those who continue to adhere to the former world champion’s false narrative.

Then this user was apparently checking out flights to visit the venue. They still hope, though, that the fight somehow comes up.

Since Floyd Mayweather Jr. is basically untrustworthy, this user believes that the event meeting such a fate was only to be expected.

Clearly, most of the followers appear incensed by the new report. Even in an exhibition, a fight with a former opponent could have made for a decent draw. Especially given how the last bout between Mayweather Jr. and Ortiz ended, the sequel would have kept the storyline exciting and worth anticipating.

Despite his retired status, Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s exhibition matches still have the capacity to draw crowds. There remain questionable episodes, such as the John Gotti III fracas. But then one cannot ignore something like the Logan Paul bout that witnessed, reportedly, one million PPV buys. Let’s hope a gripping end can be provided to what many still believe is an unfinished business.
