Even before Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk enter the squared circle at Kingdom Arena, they will know their fate. The WBC has ordered an eliminator between Agit Kabayel and Frank Sanchez, and the victor will challenge whoever holds the WBC strap after Fury and Usyk have fought it out. The two heavyweights are set to clash on the same card, and the winner will be in a position to push for a title shot in 2025. But who will bag it?

Notably, both Kabayel and Sanchez sit at #4 and #2 on the WBC heavyweight rankings, respectively, and are coming into the fight on the heels of splendid victories on the ‘Day of Reckoning’ card. But how do the two brute heavyweights stack up before their showdown? Let’s find out.

There is little separating the two on paper, as both are 31 and hold the identical, unblemished record of 24-0. However, Sanchez is the taller of the two at 6’4″ (193 cm) and holds a reach advantage of 78″ (198 cm). Moreover, the Cuban fighter has 17 knockouts to his credit and boasts an impressive KO ratio of 70%, suggesting his reliance on power to produce favorable results.

Meanwhile, Kabayel stands tall at 6’3″ (191 cm) but comes in heavier at 241.0 lbs (109.3 kgs), compared to Sanchez, who last weighed 238.0 lbs (108.0 kgs) when he stood on the scales. The German boxer has earned 16 victories through knockouts. While his KO ratio of 66% doesn’t evoke fear among rivals, he knows how to execute the game plan, as evidenced in his last fight against European champion Arslanbek Makhmudov.

Recent form, momentum, and fighting style

Kabayel is coming into the fight after recording the most impressive win of his career. He dropped Makhmudov to one knee three times, set him up with the body blows, and then went for the head in the fourth round. It only took him 4 rounds to get the job done. Interestingly, the Bochum resident was a professional kickboxer before making the switch in 2011. However, since pulling an upset against Derek Chisora in 2017, Kabayel’s career has slowed down.

He only fought seven times in the last six years because of COVID-19, managerial issues, and falling out of the fights. But Kabayel is a hard puncher, employing a more fan-friendly style, which makes him a fan favorite. On the other hand, Sanchez’s undefeated juggernaut crushed Junior Fa when they met on the Anthony Joshua vs. Otto Wallin undercard.

‘The Cuban Flash’ is learning the art of sweet science under Eddy Reynoso, who also trains Canelo Alvarez and Oscar Valdez. With Reynoso in his corner, Sanchez has grown more confident and has more faith in his boxing prowess and skill set. In addition, he is willing to face a tough challenge in Kabayel, as revealed by his co-manager, Mike Borao.

He also harbors intentions to become a world champion soon, and his smooth boxing style might help him reach the top. He knows when to act as an aggressor and warmer and when to bid his time and utilize his reach advantage. The same was on display against Efe Ajagba, as the fight went the distance, but Sanchez had smooth sailing. Can he do the same against Kabayel?

Prediction: Who wins it at Fury vs. Usyk?

The fight is closer than some fans might have expected, and it can go either way. While there have been concerns about Kabayel’s ring rust, he brushed those aside with his fight against Makhmudov. He is back to his usual devastating self and might pose a serious threat to Sanchez with his heavy punches.

But it’s not something that Sanchez hasn’t encountered before. He can dictate the pace of the fight and push forward. With Reynoso in his corner, he is expected to make swift and easy work of Kabayel. But he wouldn’t mind if they went the distance and he collected a decision win. However, it all boils down to who will handle the pressure of a big fight better. We have Sanchez winning this one and issuing a challenge to the winner of Fury vs. Usyk somewhere next year.
