Has Teofimo Lopez lost his edge, or does he just need a big-name fight to bounce back?

Ahead of facing Steve Claggett in the ring, Teofimo Lopez had declared that the fight would not go the distance of twelve rounds. However, did his statement coincide with his actions in the ring? Not really as Clagett endured Lopez’s shots leading the latter to win the contest via UD. On that note, boxing insider Rick Glaser sharply disapproved of Lopez’s performance and urged the same to face someone with a reputation at 140 lbs!

Yes, both Lopez and Claggett were highly active during the match as they together attempted 1,766 punches! However, being more accurate, Lopez was able to land 315 punches more than double what Claggett landed. We saw fine inside action in the fight. And while Lopez, at times wowed the fans with his head-body combinations, Claggett stayed within range and found his openings too. But although Claggett lacked footwork and Teo failed to finish, the fight was not entirely boring. However, Glaser feels otherwise.

The best way with one word I can describe #TeofimoLopez performance vs Steve Claggett was “Uninspiring” with a Capitol U!!!! #Boxing,” Glaser wrote on X. So, what should Lopez do next in Glaser’s opinion? Conforming to Rick’s understanding, Lopez “needs a name guy next if he’s going to stay at 140.”

Steve Claggett was a very solid catcher, but no one called for that fight,” Glaser added. In his opinion, a fight between Lopez and Elvis Rodriguez is also “acceptable” but ‘The Takeover’ should explore other options available first. Speaking of which, Lopez has already stated that he wants to face Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz next in the ring!

Teofimo Lopez is “ready” for Isaac Cruz

Earlier there was a talk about Teofimo Lopez moving up to 147 lbs. In fact, ‘The Takeover’ had even suggested a potential fight between himself and Terence Crawford. However, after the win against Claggett, Lopez eyed the WBA Super-Lightweight title currently in Isaac Cruz’s captivity. “I’m ready for it. I’m 26 [and] I’m still learning in this game. Yes, I do. Nobody is going to fight like Steve Claggett. There’s only one fighter that is going to fight like him a little bit, and he’s smaller, and that’s Pitbull Cruz,” said Teofimo Lopez.

In Lopez’s opinion, no one in the sport fights the way Cruz does. “They all box. Crawford boxes. He doesn’t really slug in there. I do these types of fights for a reason,” Lopez added, taking a dig at Crawford who is on Teo’s hit list.
