Teófimo Lopez, ‘The Soothsayer.’ No, that’s not the new moniker of the WBO and the Ring Light Welterweight Champion. He still remains ‘The Takeover.’ He even reminded the followers through a short, amusing clip early today. Though the context could have been for an altogether different reason, if one connects the dots, then it might be leading to his recent predictions over the $1 billion-worth mega business deal between Eddie Hearn‘s Matchroom Boxing and Perform Group, the provider of DAZN over-the-top service.

So reportedly, Lopez has given the DAZN five years before it washes away its hands from boxing. Most fans would remember that the Brooklyn-born former unified lightweight champion had prophesied an end of the line for Showtime Boxing. To a great extent, it came out to be true. Only time will tell if his prediction is accurate a second time around as well. In the meantime, he announced over X a “Worldwide Takeover.” Whether or not the honor belongs to him or someone else could be anyone’s educated guess.

Wearing a hoodie that had his nickname ‘Takeover,’ fans saw Teófimo Lopez swinging to Junior Mafia‘s (featuring Biggie Smalls) ‘Get Money‘ remix. Does it allude to the big news making the rounds across the boxing world? Matchroom Boxing and Perform Group have joined hands to form a joint venture. Purportedly, ‘the biggest ever deal in boxing is an eight-year contract. Per the deal, alongside DAZN, Matchroom would put before the public sixteen fights throughout the United States.

However, not all appear to be about the development. Reportedly, there has been some backlash from subscribers and fans alike since DAZN PPV began airing numerous fights at an extra cost, above and beyond the service’s monthly subscriptions. So when a subscriber indicated he wasn’t going to renew because it wasn’t worth the $225 per year, the WBO and The Ring Light Welterweight champion jumped in. Tagging Eddie Hearn, he wrote, “Eddie Hearn, like I said.,. [it will last] no more than 5 years! It’s going to happen whether you sterling silver spoon feed schmuck likes it or not!

According to Boxing Social, they asked Hearn about the champion’s comments. He said, “I don’t know why he replied to me; I didn’t even say anything… You’re talking about a guy that boxed once in 2021, twice in 2022, and once in 2023….DAZN will be over in five years? That’s actually a really bad for you, Teófimo, because if there’s only one person bidding, your number’s [going to] go down…

Lopez reads the handwriting on the wall

Last month, the world learned about Showtime terminating its 37-year relationship with boxing. It was sometime around the time when he went for his unified title defense against George Kambosos Jr. on November 27, 2021, that Lopez gave another two-year lifeline for Showtime. It must have shocked many, as that hunch, if it could be called so, came true this year. A few days after that news, ‘The Takeover’ tweeted, “I give DAZN no more than 3 years left in boxing. Maybe 5 just to prolong the damage!” Many fans will be watching whether his latest prophecy turns out to be true over time.
