The boxing pedigree of Conor Benn is without question. The twenty-six-year-old son of former two-division world champion Nigel Benn has had a successful and unblemished stint since becoming a professional. Tangled in controversy since last year, which has kept him out of the ring, the young boxer has retained an active social media presence. During one such interaction, he instead quipped a response that will turn quite a few heads, especially of old-timers.
So early today, Conor Benn took to his Instagram account and threw an open ‘Q & A’ rapid-fire to all fans and followers. A few of the questions were quite interesting. First, he was asked, “Who do think would win out of a fight between Haney and Gervonta Davis?” Benn replied, “Haney.” Then there was another question, “I see you beating all them guys at 140 and 147. [So] who do you think will be the toughest?” This time his response was, “Crawford.”

Finally, a rather peculiar question dropped in. The user asked, “Who is a better fight, Nigel Benn or Conor Benn?” And ‘The Destroyer’ answered, “Conor Benn.” The response would be a shocker to many. In his time, Nigel Benn, a former soldier, was known for his aggression and powerful punches. Turning professional in 1987, ‘The Dark Destroyer’ fought forty-eight matches, out of which he won forty-two. Nearly 73% of his wins were early stoppages.
On the other hand, the younger Benn, who turned professional in 2016, has so far fought twenty-one times. Fourteen of his wins came through knockouts. Unlike his father, Conor Benn’s knockout-to-win rate stands at nearly 67%. By his admission, Conor Benn has just started his journey. Hence, for reasons unknown to the rest, he might have the apt justification for claims of being a better boxer than his father.

Conor Benn fought Chris Van Heerden last year to defend the WBA Continental Welterweight title. His next bout was scheduled against Chris Eubank Jr., the son of another legend Chris Eubank. However, his failure to clear drug tests postponed the fight. The case has dragged on since with no return date in sight for Conor Benn as of yet. Reportedly, Benn and his team had hypothesized the high consumption of eggs as one reason for the banned substance clomifene in his body.
