After Relinquishing His Welterweight Title, Teofimo Lopez Earns the Support of Errol Spence

Teofimo Lopez has recently proved his might as he became a two-division world champion after he went the distance against the former undisputed 140 lbs. champion, Josh Taylor on June 10th. But as it turns out, Lopez is going through hard times and he may be looking forward to his retirement due to some ongoing personal family issues. In addition, after the Taylor fight, when Lopez was asked about his next endeavor, quite sadly, he replied, “Retirement man, I’m kinda tired. I’m not getting paid enough. $1million? Get the f**k out of here.” A lot of boxing fans were shocked by Lopez’s statements.

Now, just at the age of 25, Lopez has achieved remarkable feats and has also dethroned the top guys in two different divisions. But it seems like all the online thrashing and trolling is taking a toll on the young boxer’s mental health. But at such a time when he’s feeling underappreciated, the unified Welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr. had a heartful message for Teofimo Lopez.

Although Lopez is able to walk through every hardship inside the boxing ring, he seemingly isn’t able to withstand the tribulations of life. Lopez is a young father, who is going through a bad divorce and knows that he will have to fight for the custodial rights of his child in the coming months. This indeed is one of the major contributors to his ill mental health. And the statements regarding his retirement got cemented when he also vacated the Super Lightweight belt just after five days of winning it.

But during this time, when Lopez is fighting through his struggles all alone, Errol Spence Jr. posted a Story on Instagram, paving a path for the young boxer. He wrote some words of encouragement for the boxer and indicated that he must not give up yet. Spence wrote, “If it wasn’t dark days we prob wouldn’t appreciate the bright ones @teofimolopez 🤝“.

The respect between both fighters is quite mutual, as Lopez also wants the best for the undisputed Welterweight champion. When he was asked about his prediction for Spence’s fight against Terence Crawford, he sided with him and also sent out a warning to Crawford.

Well, Lopez chose Spence for the win but at the same time, he made it clear that it wasn’t a firm choice as he also credits Crawford to be one of the best fighters of the current era.

But then he explains in detail why he went with Spence for this bout. Lopez said, “Part of me sides with Spence – only reason being he’s good at body shots. Accurate with them. He knows when to throw them. Southpaw. He’s a little bit more tall, lanky. I think that he’ll read Crawford a bit more.” Furthermore when describing Crawford, he stated that he deems him to be quite “chinny“, which may pose a problem for Spence but to what extent?
