The boxing world is mourning today. One of the sport’s legends, Israel ‘Magnifico’ Vázquez, has passed away. The three-time world champion had been battling cancer. As the news spread, many prominent figures in boxing joined fans and followers in this moment of sorrow.

Earlier last month, as he fought for his life, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and Vázquez’s long-time trainer, Freddie Roach, shared information about efforts to raise funds as the cost of treatment mounted. Sadly, both of them, along with countless others, are now heartbroken as the former world champion has left for his heavenly abode.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman expressed his gratitude for Israel Vázquez’s remarkable career. He said, “Thank you, Israel, for the so many great memories that you have given us through your actions inside the ring but, most importantly, outside of it. You are now eternal; rest in peace; everything will be all right.

Israel Vázquez Castaneda, born in Mexico City, was just three weeks shy of his 47th birthday when he passed away. He began his professional career in 1995, and after a few losses and regional title wins, his breakthrough came in 2004 when he defeated José Luis Valbuena to become the IBF Super Bantamweight champion.

The following year, he added the prestigious Ring Magazine title to his resume. His third title defense marked the start of an unforgettable rivalry with fellow legend Rafael Márquez. The two battled through three iconic fights, with Vázquez winning two out of three.

Former featherweight and super featherweight champion Bilal ‘Billy’ Dib, who himself fought and survived cancer, praised Vázquez as not only a champion but a true warrior, both in and out of the ring. He said, “Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Israel Vázquez after his courageous battle with cancer. He was not only a champion but also a true warrior in and out of the ring. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who admired him. May he rest in peace.

Describing him as a true Mexican fighter who gave his all in every fight, boxing trainer Kieran Farrell also honored Vázquez’s memory. “Rest in peace, Israel Magnifico Vazquez, a true Mexican fighter who fought with pure heart every fight 💙 condolences to Israel family.

Boxing journalist Jake Donovan paid tribute to Vázquez’s contributions to the sport, especially his work as a top action fighter of the century’s first decade. “Saddened to hear that Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez has passed away at age 46 after a lengthy bout with cancer. Vazquez was the former RING 122-pound champion and one of the premier action fighters of the early 2000s. RIP Israel, heartfelt thoughts with his loved ones 🙏🏼,” said Donovan.

Freddie Roach, Vázquez’s long-time trainer, shared an emotional message. “Forever a world champion and legend in boxing. One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with—a world champion. Israel, my friend, may you rest in peace now. My condolences to the Vázquez family and to all those who called Israel their friend. Thank you, Israel, for the so many great memories that you have given us through your actions inside the ring but, most importantly, outside of it. You are now eternal; rest in peace; everything will be all right.

A fan shared memories of Vázquez’s fierce rivalry with Rafael Márquez and his subsequent role as a boxing commentator. “He was the best rival for Rafael Marquez, and he also was a great commentator for the TV show Sólo Boxeo (Only Boxing), which was broadcasted on UniMás alongside Ernesto Amador,” said the fan.

Vázquez retired following a knockout loss to Márquez in a fight for the vacant WBC title. Later reports revealed that he had been suffering from an autoimmune disorder, along with injuries, particularly to his right eye. It is time for boxing fans to remember Israel Vázquez and cherish his legacy. He risked his health and safety to entertain and inspire us all.
