The ‘Problem’ Adrien Broner is finally coming back to action after a two-year hiatus. He fought last in 2019, against the veteran Manny Pacquiao and succumbed to a unanimous decision loss. However, he’s moved on from the same and will enter the boxing ring on February 20 against Jovanie Santiago. But, who exactly is Santiago?

Jovanie ‘Lobito’ Santiago is a Puerto Rican pugilist. He was born on January 20, 1990, in Bayamon. Throughout his life, he has stayed in Puerto Rico and took up boxing at a young age. After competing as an amateur for a substantial time, ‘Lobito’ turned professional in 2007.

Right in his first bout, Santiago won by a majority decision. But, after competing for almost two years, he took a whopping six-year hiatus, returning later in 2014.

Although he took a long gap in the sport, there was no turning back for him since he turned professional.

To compensate for his inactivity, the Puerto Rican fought a massive five times in 2015 and won all of them. Until today, he remains undefeated and has successfully maintained his impressive track record.

In his last outing, Santiago defended his WBA Fedelatin super lightweight title with a daunting knockout victory over Juan Zegarra. This was his first title defense after winning it a couple of years ago against Gustavo Vittori.

Having competed at super lightweight for a large chunk of his career, ‘Lobito’ will move to welterweight to box Broner.

Can Jovanie Santiago upset Adrien Broner?

Broner hasn’t scored a win since 2018. The pressure will be immense on the ‘Problem’ as he’s developed ring rust and kept himself out of the game for a considerable time. Hence, ‘Lobito’ can capitalize on this juncture and tackle Broner.
