It’s a sight you don’t see usually. It’s all respectful at the press conferences, and smiles and past memories are being shared. Ohara Davies and Adam Azim have been friends for a long time and that’s why there is no hatred or animosity driving the fight. But it might not be the case when they stand across from each other, especially at a critical juncture in their careers.
From watching each other spar at the Peacock Gym in London, Azim and Davies have come far and will have a go at each other this Saturday, October 19 at Copper Box Arena. While Azim will have the chance to rise in the rankings, Davies has a chance to bounce back and insert his name back into the title conversation in the super lightweight division. It’s a fight with deep implications for both fighters’ careers. Before that happens, let’s have a look at how the two British boxers stack up.

Davies, 32, has captivated the fans with his hard-hitting punches in a career that has spanned over a decade. He even collected British and Commonwealth titles and has faced the best the division has to offer. Despite that, the Hackney native has an impressive record of 25-3 with 18 KOs. What has swayed the fans and pros is his penchant for knockouts, which is reflected in his KO ratio of 72%. In addition, Davies has utilized his coming forward and pressure punching to rack up wins and has utilized his dimensions of 5’8″ (173 cm) to the fullest.
Compared to him, Azim is still in the developing stages of his career, as he only made his debut in 2020. However, the 22-year-old has made rapid strides and has already collected an undefeated record of 11-0 with 8 KOs. Like Davies, he has carved out a reputation for unloading heaving punches and going for the kill instead of breaking down his opponents over a span of 10 rounds. What’s more? His KO ratio of 72.73% also puts him in the same bracket as Davies.
Besides, the Slough native carries the size and height advantage, as he stands tall at 5’10” (178 cm). He effectively uses his height to create a distance and throw powerful punches. Besides, when Azim stood on the scales, he registered a weight of 140 lbs, compared to Davies’ 139 lbs. Therefore, coming into the fight, he will have height, size, and youth advantage. But will it be enough to secure a win for him in the biggest fight of his career?

Have an interesting take?
Fighting the best gives an advantage and adds to your skills. Davies has fought the likes of Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall and every time, he has suffered a loss, he has bounced back stronger. However, his loss to Ismael Barroso in his last fight was an odd one, one that ‘Two Tanks’ has attributed to him throwing a wrong shot. So, he has a chip on his shoulder, and given his forward-coming style and volume punching, you can never count him out. Not to mention his experience and his boxing IQ, which only makes him more lethal.

But it might get tested against Azim, who had shown his skills and boxing acumen in his amateur career. He amassed national championships ten times and built his professional career on its bedrock. ‘The Assassin’ made a smart move by keeping himself active and made adjustments to his style, as he fought more professionally. But what separated him from the rest was not his power, but his agility and quickness, allowing him to be elusive and create angles for his own heavy punches.
There is a solid reason why Azim’s style reminds fans of Prince Naseem Hamed, as he combines an aggressive approach, powerful punching, sharpness, and quick footwork. It’s a sure-shot mantra of success and you can only expect him to add more tricks under his sleeves and more weapons in his arsenal. You add into the mix his youth and speed and there is no reason why you won’t pick him as a winner.

But here is a caveat. Has Azim picked a fight with Davies a little too early in his career? Because the latter is capable of winning every possible fight, despite his contemplation of his future. It will be a close fight between fighters of similar styles. But we have Azim winning the fight.
