The undisputed champion at Super Middleweight, Canelo Alvarez, is widely regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all time. It was recently announced that he will be defending his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring Super Middleweight titles against John Ryder in May 2023. Moreover, this will also mark a homecoming match for Alvarez, with the event taking place at Guadalajara, Jalisco. The duo recently came together for a press conference and officiated their fight.

Alvarez will face Ryder at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, on May 6, 2023. Their recent press conference saw the duo come face-to-face for the first time. As per BBC, talking about fighting in his hometown, Alvarez said, “Returning to the ring. And coming back to fight in Jalisco, where I’m from, makes me especially happy. And in John Ryder, I’m facing a very competitive fighter.”
Ryder, on the other hand, expressed his respect for Alvarez. Meanwhile, he also made it a point to mention that it was his time to become the world champion.
Additionally, Alvarez also revealed that he spoke to Jalisco’s governor, Enrique Alfaro. for the people who are unable to afford tickets. He stated that they were working on making arrangements for those individuals. It is also worth noting that Alvarez had previously defended his undisputed title in a trilogy rematch against Gennady Golovkin.
Fans pour in mixed reactions to this fight
Alvarez also made it a point to announce the officiating of the fight via an Instagram post. Fans however were not too thrilled about this matchup. In fact, a lot of them even took to social media to share their thoughts about the same.
A few fans were initially excited about the matchup. A user named Andy 07 mentioned, “Canelo is going to eat him alive. But great payday for Ryder.” And, Bigohbeezy said, “Loool ngl interesting fight Canelo wins, But I hope Ryder takes it ngl.”
Meanwhile, there were others who felt there were better matchups for Alvarez. A user named Tune stated, “How do you not fight Andrade, Benavidez, or even Charlo? But give guys like this a chance.”

Similarly, Toby Raworth was surprised by the contrasting skillset. He stated, “Disgraceful that he is in there with Canelo. They are so far apart in skills and experience. I hope he doesn’t suffer any serious injuries.
However, a few fans were quick to express their disinterest in the fight. Danny Hird said, “Absolutely pointless fight!” And, Frank Esgambellone added, “Thanks. A fight no one asked for.”
