Can Abel Ramos finally break through and claim the title after years of relentless perseverance?

If there is a career that should be known for severe grit and perseverance, it should be of Abel Ramos. He has been grinding on the top level for more than 13 years now, and will finally get a chance to clinch the gold for himself when he faces Mario Barrios on 15th November at the AT&T Stadium.

The last time he got to fight for a title was in 2020 when he challenged Yordenis Ugás for the WBA welterweight title. He ultimately lost the match via a split decision but showed everyone his gritty nature. He got into a slump after that fight, losing 2 out of his next three fights. But like always, he bounced back after defeating Juan Ramon Guzman earlier this year, setting him up for the WBC Welterweight title on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul. This rise to the top has intrigued many fans about his origins and upbringing. So, let’s take a deep dive into Abel Ramos’ early life.

Where is Abel Ramos from? What is his ethnicity and nationality?

Ramos was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Casa Grande, Arizona, just a year later so that they could be close to Mexico, their native country. The 28-6 boxer has often talked about how his father wanted him to stay connected to his roots back in Sinaloa, Mexico, and how he used to visit their family across the border regularly.

Boxing has been a big part of his life since childhood. “My family members were always fans of boxing,” stated Ramos in one of his interviews with Premier Boxing Champions. He was trained by his older brother, Jesus Ramos Sr., who wanted to be a boxer himself. The training started as the 13-year-old wanted to lose some weight, so he “started tagging along with our bigger brother and that’s how we started.”

According to Venere, Ramos’ surname has its origin in both Spain and Portugal. It is derived from the Latin word ‘Ramus,’ meaning “branch.” The surname mostly derives from geographical locations rather than any cultural or religious significance.

As the surname started to spread across the globe, it started intertwining with various religions and communities. Most of the regions where the surname is prevalent still practice Catholicism, indicating that Abel Ramos and his family might be following the same religion.
