He earned nearly $58 million from the bout. But ‘Legacy is Earned’ is perhaps more known for being Canelo Alvarez‘s second professional loss than Dmitry Bivol‘s twentieth straight win or fourth (Super) Light heavyweight title defense. The Mexican icon returned to defend his Super Middleweight titles subsequently. The year is almost over. But there’s still no news on the Bivol rematch, despite Alvarez reportedly hinting at pursuing it. So, what happened? The undisputed champion highlighted the happenings leading to the second match not materializing.

Canelo Alvarez was speaking to Brian Custer. The Showtime Championship Boxing host started with his recent move to Al Haymon‘s PBC, a three-fight deal. Then Custer asked why he was fighting Jermell Charlo instead of Jermall Charlo. Alvarez replied that he wasn’t aware of the precise reason why the switchover happened. However, as far as he knows, it is irrelevant since he is a boxer. So he will fight whoever stands opposite him.

Then he also explained that, despite being smaller in size in the current weight division, he doesn’t care. According to Alvarez, given his track record, Jermell Charlo is a better fighter than his brother. Then, the obvious question about his recent form came up. Probably surprising many, the Super Middleweight champion answered, “They’re right…they’re right, uh, because you know I’m not able to train 100% on in on those fight uh for my hand, I’m not able to train 100%, but right now I’m able to train 100%...”

When Custer asked about any chances for a David Benavidez bout, Canelo Alvarez replied that the possibility always remained since big matches always excited him. After he responded to queries on the pound-for-pound best status and Terence Crawford climbing the division to meet him, the Showtime Boxing host asked, “Bivol, that rematch, has that ship sailed?”

The Mexican icon replied, “Look, he asked and tried to make my the negotiation hard right and [and] try to make his own decision and everything and and and I try my best, and I try my best….”

Hence, he clarified that he prefers staying focused on the bout against Jermell Charlo and working with PBC.

A try that fell short

All through the months, despite offers from David Benavidez and the John Ryder title defense, it appeared that Canelo Alvarez would make moves to avenge the May 7 loss. After all, he might have turned the tables. But to what end? First, it appeared that he would be fighting Jermall Charlo. Later, as the dust settled, it turned out to be the latter’s twin brother, Jermell Charlo.

Alvarez and ‘Iron Man’ are all set for a titanic clash on September 30. Dmitry Bivol, on the other hand, hasn’t returned to the ring since another title defense against Gilberto Ramirez on November 5.
