The year 2023 seems to be a blessed one for boxing. After the Davis–Garcia and Haney–Lomachenko fights, boxing lovers will see another top drawer by July’s end. Like many, the match was always in the process of making. However, dispensing off all differences, the stakeholders finally managed to bring around Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. for a titanic clash on July 29. The excitement seems to have caught on with even those once associated with the fighters. Some willingly shared a helpful pointer or two despite a bitter past.
It’s a bit late by boxing standards, but fans aren’t complaining. Reportedly, Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. lined up for a title unification on November 19. However, the star-crossed contest met an untimely wreck. Crawford went about his business and defended the WBA Featherweight title on December 10. But Spence Jr. has not marked a return to the ring since April last year. Thankfully, lady luck smiled and blessed the two belligerents with an announcement on May 25 about their impending duel.

Unsurprisingly, the big match has got everyone talking. From fans to pundits and critics, everyone’s having a go as two of the best fighters of our time finally meet. So much so that even those who knew the boxers in days of old would like to have a say on how the fight might turn up given their knowledge about the persons involved. FightHype caught up with Top Rank boss Bob Arum and asked for his views on the bout.
The reporter asked whether Arum, who always believed that Crawford would win probably by stoppage in a fight between the two, persisted with the view or, over time, Spence Jr. became the favorite to win. The sagacious nonagenarian replied, “…I always believe that Crawford was the better fighter [and] that Crawford would win either by points or knockout, probably by knockout but maybe by [the] point.. believe that Terence has too much talent uh for Spence, who’s a very talented fighter, but I think Crawford is more talented than Spence.”

Bob Arum’s assertion might come as a surprise to many. Top Rank took charge of Terence Crawford’s career in 2011. But finally, the relationship came to an end. ‘Bud’ announced parting ways from the promotion after the Shawn Porter fight in November 2021. Later in January last year, Crawford filed a case against Top Rank. According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, the Omaha, Nebraska-born fighter alleged Top Rank’s preferential treatment of white and Latino boxers. Additionally, he sought $5.4 million as compensation from the promotions for not fulfilling the requirement per the 2018’s contract extension besides being unable to offer him a contest with Errol Spence Jr.
