Many boxing fans may be familiar with this theme. After waiting for a long time, a great fight is anticipated when two big names face each other. But, the bout proves to be a dud in the end, leaving everyone in bad taste. But, at the same time, a surprise fight not heard by many might turn up to be the trump card everyone’s looking for. Last Saturday, the audience at the YouTube theater in Inglewood, California, were amazed by the performance of a young southpaw. It turned out to be one of those fights that no one expected. Subsequently, Oscar De La Hoya took to Twitter to hail the performance.
Oscar has the most befitting nickname – The Golden Boy. From the days when he won the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics to his nearly seven-year undefeated professional run and now the boxing promotions, all the ventures he touched turned triumphant. As much as he is busy with one of the year’s most significant fights, “The Golden Boy” has a few other vital prospects to impress fans and pundits.

Twenty-five-year-old Santa Ana-born Alexis Rocha has been in the sport since 2016 and lost only one bout in his career. “Lex” won the first bout of the year against Ghanaian George Ashie on January 28. He won fourteen of twenty-two wins through knockouts. Hence, it would come as a surprise if he started the new year’s campaign in any other way.

But the emphatic victory is receiving rave views on how the Californian handled the fight. So much so, fight promoter Oscar De La Hoya took to his Instagram story with the caption, “In the back and forth action fight, @alexisrocha777 with the KO of the year so far.”
Alexis Rocha wasn’t behind and thanked everyone, “I want to thank God for blessing me with the W last night ❤️ I also want to give a big thank you to everyone that came out and showed support🙏🏼 #TeamLex #SantaAna #YoutubeTheatre #DAZN.”

When the seventh round started, Ashie found himself cornered by Rocha’s left hand. The latter kept the Ghanaian boxer on the defensive without letting off the pressure. And finally served the coup de grce with a vicious right hook. A direct hit to Ashie’s chin sent him down, crashing to the canvas on his face.

Confident Alexis Rocha seeks a Crawford match
Since the loss at the hands of Rashidi Ellis on October 30, 2020, Rocha has six consecutive victories. This makes him the top available challenger for Terence Crawford’s WBO title. In fact, “Lex” told senior sports writer Chris Mannix from DAZN, “I’m ready for the big names. “Errol Spence doesn’t want to fight Crawford for some reason. He’s fighting [former unified WBC/WBA welterweight titlist Keith] Thurman. I’m next in the WBO; I want Crawford next.”
Per rankings, Rocha stands behind Keith Thurman. However, the latter would reportedly face reigning champion Errol Spence Jr. by May. That leaves Rocha in a great position to battle Crawford next. “Bud,” without an opponent or fight date, is anxious to return to the ring.
