In a week, Canelo Alvarez will face Gennady Golovkin for the final time. Prior to the conclusion of Alvarez and ‘GGG’, Saul Alvarez, in the latest episode of DAZN sponsored ‘The Making of Canelo’ talked about why he had punched Mayweather’s leg in their 2013 historic fight. According to Alvarez, Mayweather during that fight touched him with his gloves and rubbed his eyes. And since every action had a reaction, Alvarez reacted by hitting Mayweather with a blow below the waist.

Pointing at the film of their fight, Alvarez said, “Look, he’s doing something with his gloves. He’s touching my face with his glove and that’s why I punched his leg. Because he grabbed me like that and he started to rub my eyes with his glove. So I hit him in his legs. They say all action takes a reaction, and that was my reaction.”

DAZN representative claims Floyd Mayweather looked at Canelo Alvarez as a kid

Canelo Alvarez was only 23 at the time he faced Mayweather. Even then, he walked into the bout with an unbeaten record of 42 wins. Mayweather, 36, held 44 wins in his record. In addition, both had, by this time, defeated Shane Mosley. Prior to fighting Canelo, Mayweather had 21 title fights! Needless to say, he won all of them. Surprisingly, Canelo also had 21 title fights before he stepped in with ‘TBE’. However, Alvarez was yet to touch the likes of fighters (Mosley apart) Mayweather by then had dealt.

While Canelo referred to Mayweather touching his face, a DAZN representative in the video said, “It is symbolic of the fact Mayweather, on that particular night, felt like ‘I’m the master here. This is my domain. I own this ring – this 20*20 stretch of canvas. I think looking back, he probably looks at Canelo as a kid.”

When Mayweather fought Alvarez, he was 36. If all went well, Alvarez would have more fights than Mayweather by the time he turned 36. With that said, what do you make of Alvarez’s recent comments on ‘May’? Write down your thoughts in the comments below.
