Tyson’s relationship with D’Amato was more than that of coach and student, as D’Amato was more like a father figure to him. Tyson has attributed his success to his coaching and holds him in the highest regard. This was recently proven after Iron Mike admitted that he would ‘kill’ a person for his former coach. In an appearance on the Advantage Connors podcast, Tyson detailed the time he was under D’Amato. He stated that he would start street fights if he found anyone disrespecting D’ Amato. “If anybody said anything disrespectful, it was a street fight right there. I was punching them in their face.” He said.

Moreover, he added that he would ‘kill somebody’ for his coach, “I would kill somebody for him” he said. Shocked at this, the interviewer claimed that this was a big statement to make. However, Tyson stated that this was nothing compared to the lengths he would go to. “ That’s Nothing,” Tyson responded. This just goes on to show how much Iron Mike admired D’ Amato, even willing to ‘kill’ a person for his former coach.
The unbreakable bond between Mike Tyson and Cus D’ Amato
Iron Mike had a rough childhood and lacked guidance due to his parents being absent. Tyson’s father left him and his mother while the former champ was a child, leaving his mother to take care of him. Things would only get worse for Kid Dynamite after his mother passed away during his teenage years, leaving him an orphan.
However, D’Amato would take Tyson under his wing and give a place to him in his house. He would later adopt Tyson legally becoming his father. With Iron Mike now training under D’Amato, he would go on to dominate junior amateur competitions. However, he D’ Amato passed away when Tyson was just 19 years old. The following year, Iron Mike would go on to fulfill his dream by becoming the youngest-ever heavyweight champion in the history of the sport.
