This comes because of Oscar De La Hoya’s claims of a return to the sport. The promoter has hinted that he is fit and ready; and he wants a fight against current IBF middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.
Apparently, Hopkins thinks this is a good idea. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, ‘The Executioner’ said, “Triple G always had and always will have a punch that is declining.
“Even in the win recently. Don’t let that fight fool the people that know. But it don’t fool these eyes.”
He then said that ‘GGG’ is undoubtedly a future Hall of Famer and has earned it. However, he added, “A smart, seen every style, been in there with better talent [fighter], they can pick the lock and systematically, knowing that he has the right plan, the right conditions, with all his experience, Oscar wins by unanimous decision.”

Is Bernard Hopkins right about Oscar De La Hoya?
De La Hoya was one of the best fighters of his era; he amassed multiple world titles in the course of his career. However, he has been out of the sport for 12 years. Furthermore, despite recent training videos, he is in no physical shape to take on an active fighter.
‘Triple G’ is in the twilight of his career, but is still fit and powerful enough to be a worthy middleweight champion. Furthermore, he will have no problem with ring rust or any such problems.

Therefore, even though it is highly unlikely, if the two were to fight, we can not see De La Hoya beating an active Gennady Golovkin.
However, Hopkins has shared the ring with Oscar De La Hoya and beat the ‘Golden Boy’. So he surely has first-hand experience of De La Hoya’s fighting style and experience. Thus, maybe he is on to something and it could be closer than we think.
