Ryan Garcia recently discussed his past losses in the amateur circuit during an interview with Speedy Morman. Although he faced a few defeats before turning pro, Garcia revealed that he only lost to two fighters who are currently still active in the sport – Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson.
When Morman pointed out that there are likely people who can claim they beat Garcia in the past, the young boxer responded by comparing his experience to that of legendary fighters like Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Ray Leonard. “It’s just your process of becoming a great fighter,” he explained.
Garcia went on to reference Michael Jordan, who famously did not make it in his high school basketball team before going on to become a basketball icon. “Michael Jordan obviously, in high school, he got cut from his basketball team. That’s the difference between somebody that’s chasing greatness and somebody that just lets off, lets their foot off the gas and gets comfortable,” he said.
In conclusion, Garcia’s losses in the amateur circuit were simply part of his journey to becoming a great fighter. He draws inspiration from the likes of Mayweather, Leonard, and Jordan, who faced setbacks before achieving greatness.
The popular boxer also expressed his wish to revisit a bout with a current champion.

Ryan Garcia’s future plans with Devin Haney
Garcia is already thinking ahead and has already made plans after his fights against Davis. He has his sights set on a showdown with Devin Haney if he can pull off the upset against Davis. Garcia once held the WBC interim crown, making him the top contender for Haney’s lightweight title, but he chose to pursue a fight with Davis instead. But recently, Haney reacted in silence after Ryan Garcia’s call-out.
Haney, who is a technical master, is going to defend his four world titles against Vasiliy Lomachenko on May 20th. Despite their differing styles, Garcia is eager to reignite his rivalry with Haney, with whom he split six bouts in the amateurs. In Garcia’s opinion, fighting both Davis and Haney in their primes is what’s driving him to take them on.
