Saturday night’s fight between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. was a perfect example of boxing’s unpredictability—where anything that can happen will happen. Roach, a massive underdog, defied the odds by pushing Davis to his limits, nearly handing the Baltimore native his first career loss. And because of Roach’s wonderful performance, he has won a new fan in UFC commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan.
After the pair met under the bright lights in Barclays Center, the fight started as usual. Davis didn’t engage much in the first few rounds, reading Roach and his moves. However, ‘The Reaper’ had his strategy memorized to a T and stuck to it. Roach didn’t show off much, remained calm, and waited for Davis to start attacking. When Davis was finally ready for action, so was Roach, and the duo went blow for blow.
Despite Davis’ bone-crushing power, which has earned him a 93 percent knockout rate, Roach stood his ground and, at times, sent Davis stumbling. The Baltimore native was never really able to take a clear lead, while Roach looked dominant and aggressive throughout with his precise counter-punching. The fight finally came to an end, and the fighters had to settle for a majority draw. Many in the community screamed robbery and felt Roach had done enough.

Regardless, a rematch seemed like the obvious next step, but the path to it remains uncertain at best. Amid the uncertainty, Joe Rogan weighed in on Roach’s performance with a remark that felt like rubbing salt in Davis’ wound. “Watching the replay of the outstanding title fight last night between [Gervonta Davis] and [Lamont Roach Jr.],” he wrote on Instagram while sharing a picture from Saturday’s fight.

“I had never seen Lamont fight before, but I’m a big fan now,” Rogan continued. “Fight was a draw, but it was an amazing contest and I really hope they run it back.” Rogan’s remark aside, there’s a new update on the rematch between Davis and Roach.

WBA Prez wants to make an immediate rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr.
WBA President Gilberto Mendoza is pushing for an immediate rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. following their controversial majority draw on Saturday night. The main issue arose in Round 9 when Davis voluntarily took a knee, then went to his corner, where his team wiped his face with a towel—an illegal move under boxing rules that could have resulted in a disqualification.

Despite this, referee Steve Willis did not rule a knockdown, which ultimately impacted the scorecards. Mendoza believes this controversy demands a rematch, stating, “We need to send a strong message.” If ordered, the rematch must take place within 120 days. While Davis welcomed the idea, he hinted at wanting a different fight next.

However, Mendoza’s push could force his hand, giving Roach—who was a major underdog—a shot at justice. The WBA Championships Committee is expected to vote on the rematch soon.
That said, it appears the previously unknown Lamont Roach Jr. has earned fans in big places. Just imagine what an appearance in Rogan’s podcast could do for his popularity, especially after schooling the ‘face of boxing.’ What are your thoughts on Rogan’s remarks?
