Cinco de Mayo weekend promised fireworks with a star-studded lineup, but it ended up falling flat in the eyes of fans and pundits alike. Big names like Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Canelo Alvarez stepped into the ring with plenty of hype behind their bouts, but instead of thrillers, the weekend delivered a string of underwhelming, forgettable performances. In fact, the Canelo fight was so bad that CompuBox recorded the bout for the fewest combined punches thrown in a 12-round fight, with a total of 445 punches (Canelo 152, Scull 293). It broke the previous record of 459 punches recorded during the Deontay Wilder vs. Joseph Parker fight in 2023. Now, things have gone from bad to worse.

Former WBA super lightweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero has issued Canelo Alvarez a dire warning about UFC head honcho Dana White. You see, with William Scull out of the way, Canelo is officially on a collision course with two-weight undisputed champion Terence Crawford on 12th September in Las Vegas. According to media reports, the fight is set to earn ‘Cinnamon’ a staggering $150 million, positioning him as the highest-paid boxer of 2025. Hence, as the anticipation builds for the fight, Romero appeared in The Danza Project podcast, where he was asked about the fights last weekend in both New York and Riyadh.

“Those were two horrible [fights],” Romero said about the Haney and Canelo fights. “I couldn’t even watch the Devin fight, bro. I was warming up [in the] back. I didn’t want to fall asleep on the f**king way to the ring.” Later in the podcast, Romero suggested that boxers like Canelo and Haney don’t have the “will to win.”

Romero added that these boxers already have fights lined up and are told by promoters, “No matter what happens, whether you win or lose, you’re going to still fight.” So, the fighters are just motivated by the next paycheck. “These people, they all fight, Canelo is included in this now too, they’re all fighting for the next check,” Romero said.

He then warned Canelo Alvarez about Dana White, who will be promoting the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight, suggesting White won’t tolerate such an approach under his watch. “In the UFC, if you’re not fighting to win, Dana White cuts your f**king a** out,” he said during the podcast. “He’ll give you one chance but still if you ain’t fighting to win, Dana don’t f**k with that.”

It’s worth noting that White, in collaboration with GEA and the TKO group, has launched a new boxing league. The Canelo-Crawford fight will be their inaugural event that White will promote. Regardless, whether White will have any real control over the boxing legends is arguable. But it’s not just Romero who is criticizing Canelo Alvarez for his last fight.

Teddy Atlas claims William Scull may have won over Canelo Alvarez

Boxing legend Teddy Atlas stirred debate following Canelo Alvarez’s underwhelming win over William Scull on May 3, suggesting the challenger may have edged the fight. On his THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas podcast, Atlas criticized the bout as a “stinker” and argued that Canelo shared the blame for the lackluster action.

“Scull, he didn’t fight so much to win as he did to survive and steal the fight,” Atlas said. Still, he acknowledged Scull may have done enough. “I could see even giving it to [Scull]… a one-point win or a draw.” While not endorsing Scull as the rightful winner, Atlas said, “Technically, if Scull won… I could see, technically, the reason you could look at Scull to get [the win].”

That said, even though Dana White is in charge of the promotion of Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford, it’s unlikely he will be able to rule over the two boxers as White has been doing in the UFC. Not to mention, even if he tries, UFC fighter Michael Chandler has continuously lost fights, yet has landed great bouts. Who says the same cannot happen in boxing under his eye? Do you think Canelo has anything to worry about?
