Is Lin Yu-Ting the next big name in boxing, or just a flash in the pan?

Lin Yu Ting just clinched her first Olympic medal at Paris Olympics 2024 defeating Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva by unanimous decision, 5-0. Ting is a tall Southpaw who did not have any trouble outboxing her opponent. In the middle of a gender controversy just like Imane Khelif, she secured a bronze medal just like the Algerian.  The IOC allowed her to compete in the Paris Olympics because the athlete with a long and prolific career, met all criteria of testing according to the organization.

Since she is on the way to winning her bronze medal in the Paris Olympics, fans are curious about what payment she is going to receive as a prize. However, the payments made in the Olympics for combat sports are a little bit different from that of UFC or BKFC. So let’s dive deep into the process.

The International Olympic Committee or IOC does not directly pay any Olympic athletes for winning any medals. But do not worry this does not mean that they do not go without a payment. Instead, the payment or any kind of reward for athletes is received from the respective countries’ National Olympic Community or NOC. It is up to the sports Federation and governments of the country that the athlete is representing. The amount of money that China will pay Lin Yu Ting is not known publicly. However, an estimate tells us that Hong Kong which is separate from China in the Olympics pays $768,000 to gold medallists.

On top of that financial rewards totaling more than $3.1 million in the boxing competitions. The IBA announced prize money for all the boxes who win medals, but since she was disqualified from the IBA last year, due to the non-transparent, testing related to gender, it is not confirmed whether this organization is going to pay her even if she wins a bronze medal.

Here is a breakdown of the payments in boxing. – The gold medal winners get $100,000 in total. The amount is divided into $50,000 for the athlete, $25,000 for the National Federation, and $25,000 for the coach. As for Silver medalists, they earn $50,000, which is split between $25,000 for the athlete and $25,000 for the coach and the National Federation. The Bronze medalists get  $25,000  where $ 12,500 is for the athlete and $12,500 is shared between the coach and the National Federation.

Lin Yu Ting guaranteed an Olympic medal after latest win in Paris

Both Lin and Imane Khelif have been a scrutiny due to the backlash they received for a failed test at IBA. Now that the reality of the controversy came to light, the IOC  gave them a green signal to participate in the Paris Olympics. Surprisingly, both of them secured their position and ensured the possibility of winning at least a bronze medal.

As for Lin Yu Ting, she did suffer too heavy falls on the canvas by Staneva who boosted several punches onto her face. The audience was cheering for Lin after the final decision of the match and reprimanded her opponent. Now Lin is fighting with Turkey’s Esra Yildiz in the semi-finals.

Thomas Bach spoke out about the controversy  of having Lin and Khelif fight in the women’s division on Saturday.“What is going on in this context in the social media with all this hate speech, with this aggression and abuse, and fueled by this agenda, is unacceptable,” Bach said. Even the former Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen supported her through his social media.
