In 2016, on the occasion of Muhammad Ali Unfiltered, Derek Jeter, former MLB player and founder of Jeter’s Leaders, sat with Lonnie Ali. With the arrival of the new book, Jeter and Lonnie Ali spoke about Muhammad in intimate detail. While Lonnie Ali spoke about the man she knew, Jeter addressed the impact and power Ali garnered.

Jeter began with the first time he met Muhammad Ali. ‘The Greatest‘ and the Jeter’s Leaders had an encounter in 2005. It was a moment that Derek Jeter described being an ‘awesome experience’ that his family and the leaders would remember for the rest of their lives.

Jeter said, “We had some of our leaders go to the Ali Center in 2005. Well, initially we met [in] 2004 at the all-star game in Houston. Then in 2005, we sent some of our leaders, Jeter’s Leaders from our foundation to the Muhammad Ali Center. The following year we honored Muhammad and Lonnie. Later on that year we had the leadership conference in Chicago.”

“It was an awesome experience that our leaders will remember. But more importantly, my family will remember,” Jeter added.

Encouraged by Lonnie Ali, Jeter spoke about the sort of man Ali was in his eyes. In addition, he spoke about what Ali’s platform stood for in and outside the ring.

Jeter addressed the fierce competitor Ali was. However, more importantly, Ali realized the power and impact he could use for the betterment of society and fellow beings. According to Jeter, Ali even resonated with people who were not into boxing.

Jeter added saying, “He was a fierce competitor but more importantly, he understood the power and impact he could use with his platform. He did that for the betterment of the world. Muhammad is someone who resonates with people even if you’re not a boxing fan.

Muhammad Ali was a figure who stood for equality, resistance, and love. His words echoed far beyond the enclosure of the ring. Therefore, Jeter concluded by saying, “Whether you’re in this country or not in this country everybody knows Muhammad Ali is The Greatest for not only in the ring but everything he did outside.”
