Should Fox apologize for the Mallory Swanson debacle, or is this just blown out of proportion?

Fox made quite the blunder on Saturday, and the former Showtime CEO, Stephen Espinoza, is here to correct them. Two-time all-star Dansby Swanson registered his 1000th MLB career hit against the Chicago White Sox. On the same day, his wife became part of the Olympic glory. Mallory Swanson clinched the gold medal for the US women’s soccer team in the last match against Brazil. All this sounds fine, right?

But wait, here’s the twist. After Mallory scored the only goal of the game in the 57th minute of an intense final match, and her efforts helped the national team clinch its first gold medal since the 2012 London Olympics, Fox wanted to commemorate the achievements of the power couple by putting up a graphic of the duo for all to see during the Chicago Cubs match against White Sox.

This is where things went south. Instead of putting up an image of Mallory, the folks at Fox used an image of her national teammate Sophia Smith next to Mallory’s husband Dansby in the graphic. While it was a hilarious mistake to make, it didn’t help that fans quickly caught on to the debacle.

ESPN’s radio host and columnist Sarah Spain was first to catch the mistake from the broadcaster, as she made her way to X, sharing a snap of the blunder, writing, “Am I still drunk (yes) or does Fox have an apology in its future…..” This quickly drew former Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza’s attention, who responded to the post, “That’s not Mallory Swanson.” Soon, fans began slamming Fox for their blunder online.

What’s your perspective on:

Should Fox apologize for the Mallory Swanson debacle, or is this just blown out of proportion?

Have an interesting take?

However, Fox quickly caught on to their mistake when their gaffe started blowing up on the social media platform. They corrected their mistake immediately by using an actual image of Mallory in the graphic. Even the commentators during the Cubs vs. Sox game can be heard poking fun at the entire situation. Meanwhile, Dansby Swanson shared his thoughts on Mallory Swanson’s achievement, and guess what, he didn’t make a mistake.

He wrote, “God is so good. Always and forever. You are such an inspiration to so many, but more to me than anyone can ever fathom. Your faith in God’s plan, gratitude in life, and the grace and joy in which you live and play shine brightly every day.” Dansby also celebrated her big day, noting that she snagged both a gold medal and her 100th international cap on the same day, cheering on her incredible journey and their shared happiness.

It sounds like someone at Fox was having a very long day, which may have gotten longer still after the blunder that left many correcting them on social media. However, if you think about it, this mistake made the moment even more memorable. What did you think about this whole situation?
