Ronnie Coleman fought through challenging circumstances to emerge as the winner. Moreover, he never dreamed of becoming Mr. Olympia. However, a free gym membership unleashed the king’s true potential. Before becoming the legendary mass monster of the 1990s, the strength athlete was a Texas cop. He also worked at a pizza chain and waited tables. However, there was one job that the ex-sheriff considered particularly difficult.
A few days ago, the sensational bodybuilder with eight Sandow trophies appeared on The Iced Coffee Hour podcast. The Hall of Famer discussed his illustrious career and some lesser-known stories from Coleman’s life.

The 26 IFBB pro title holder spoke about different circumstances he dealt with in the interview. He recalled one of the tough jobs that Coleman did. The veteran bodybuilder explained that he had to cut the grass growing around cotton plants.
The task was physically strenuous. The King said, “That was the hardest job ever because you out there from six in the morning until 12 noon. They will not let you work past that because you wl die. You would have literally died no matter how much water you’re drinking…” Furthermore, the IFBB pro said he had to walk a lot under the blazing sun. Add to his extreme heat and humidity to make the situation more taxing.

One would think that Coleman would find lifting a massive weight in the gym challenging, as the bodybuilder is famous for pushing his body to the limits during his hay days. Instead, this old job proved hard for the Louisiana-born. The eight-time Mr. Olympia was the successor to Dorian Yates, who displayed unparalleled muscularity and conditioning on the Olympia stage. So, to win against Yates and talented bodybuilders like Flex Wheeler and Kevin Levrone, the King trained like the champions. However, the bodybuilding legend faced health issues in his quest to become the best.

Coleman underwent multiple surgeries
The musclebound behemoth had to undergo thirteen surgeries to treat his herniated disc that he dislocated in 1996. Shockingly, the champion went on to win eight consecutive titles from 1998 to 2005 despite the injury. His intensive exercises, which made his lower back and leg striations legendary, made his condition worse. Unable to deal with the pain, Coleman got his condition treated in 2007.

In 2018 and 2019, Coleman underwent further surgeries to treat broken screws in the back. Sadly, the King lost his ability to walk without aid. He now needs crutches or a wheelchair for movement. However, the unfazed champion has reigned in his pain through stem cell therapy that he has been undergoing over the past two years.
